5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, good looking and well made 21 May 2011
By Martin
I feel some of the negative comments expressed are totally missleading and unfounded.
This is a beautifully made, well designed, fast portable hard drive that has worked on every computer I've plugged it into...and thats at least a dozen or more laptops and several desktop PC's to date.
If you don't want the encryption software then format the drive simple as! most professional users would see the FREE software as a bonus but if you want direct/simple use of the space then format the HDD from new.
As for the cable..THIS IS A USB 3.0 device so has a USB 3.0 port and so needs a USB 3.0 cable...not rocket science.
Small portable (laptop HDD drive portables) have always been relatively slow but USB 3.0 changes all of that! However, you will need a USB 3.0 port and they are not widespread at the moment although by buying one of these you are future proofing.
My experience is this USB 3.0 device still runs considerably faster even when connected to a USB 2.0 port wayhay!
This is a well built and attractive hard drive, the rubber protector does detract from it's good looks although I'm sure it works. Personally I bought a semi hard case so the HDD and cable could be stored neatly away.
A colleague of mine has asked me to order him the exact same unit, he doesn't want anything else as he likes mine so much.
Really don't be put off by what others have said, this is a top quality product that works very well and I suspect the negative comments have been more about user error and connecting to older hardware than any real issues with this device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 18 April 2011
I Purchased the exact same one from PC World.

What is with the other 1 start reviews? I have already replied to those.

For me this product works absolutely perfect and it looks stunning. You don't have to have the red belt on if you want, I chose to take it off and keep it in the box safe as its difficult to put in your pocket with the belt.

The device is fast 30-40 mb/s on USB 2.0. I only have USB 2.0 so I can not comment on how fast it is/may be on USB 3.0 but keep in mind USB 3.0 promises between 300-500 mb/s.

For the technique it requires 500 mA of power. If your system is old and doesn't provide that there is a extra USB Male connection. Most PCs made in the past 5 years will provide that.

The extra male USB connection is for extra power IF NEEDED. I personally do not need it as my laptop is brand new 2011. Windows 7 recognised it immediately and it worked immediately too. I chose not to enable encryption at this time but it provides 256bit AES encryption if needed which is the words strongest form of encryption.

It also boasts protection from a fall at 2 meters (7ft) Although I haven't tested that claim, and don't plan to.

The weight is great, and the casing is a great quality, although would have been nice with a slip case to protect the cables (at the moment mine is in a sock)
Iomega are a reliable brand and I would definitely recommend this hard drive.
