I bought one of these back in Feb 2010. To start with, all worked well, set up was fairly straightforward (I am fairly IT literate) and moved what I wanted to share on to it, including all my photos and I tunes collection.
I initially installed it on to an XP desktop and then a vista laptop. The included backup software soon becomes a pain in the butt, so I uninstalled that after about a month.
I began to notice at certain times that the drive was not visible on the network, a quick click on the desktop icon to the configure utility and a rescan for network drives fixed it and I initially put it down to a dodgy Wi-Fi connection on the laptop and the age of the desktop.
However, this began happen more and more frequently as time went by. I upgraded to a new Desktop earlier this year, and the problem on the desktop was less frequent - but still occurred, It was then that I discover that the dropping of the network connection was a common problem which is a bit of a snag for an NETWORK ATTACHED storage drive.
1 week ago, the connectivity would last for no more than 5 minutes, and then would go and it would not even be discoverable using the IP address of the drive.
I do not expect stuff to last forever, but less than 2 years is poor. As it is has no option to power off when not in use, or even a power button, I have turned it off at the mains which may well be the cause of the issue. But if it was not meant to be turned off in that way, surely another option would have been included by the designers at Iomega..............
My advice to you would be, do not buy this and even though it seems some new Iomega products are getting better "expert" reviews, I am not going to be buying any other Iomega product ever again. Luckily, I backed up the stuff on this to another USB connected drive to the Desktop, so data loss is going to be minimal, but that's not the point. A poor product that does not work as it should.
