Good product, flawed software,

This review is from: Iomega DVD +/- RW/DL 16x8x8x 40x24x40 external USB2.0 (Personal Computers)
I've had almost no trouble whatsoever with this DVD re-writer. It has no trouble burning either +/- formats, and if you're looking for a good value external re-writer, go for this one.The only problem I had is that the bundled software is somewhat limited. The first time I tried to make a data DVD, it was corrupted (something to do with a 'cyclic redundancy error' - ???) and the software to create video DVDs does not burn avi files, and cannot create PAL DVDs from NTSC files either. It does come with some other useful software, but if you buy this product, I'd recommend buying/downloading a copy of Nero if you don't already have it. Apart from the software niggles, this is a well made and easy to install/use product.

The iomega super dvd writer looks very well built & looks strong. The dvd drawer when open fills a little flimsy and the power lead plug is a little bit fiddly when trying to plug it into the back of the dvd rw,it has an off set multi pin plug. The drive is a little bit noisy when the disk is spinning. It is much better than the freecom classic dvd rw, plus it comes with good collection of free software (musicmatch /my dvd /adobe photoshop album 2.0).Overall a very good dvd rw and i'm not disappointed in buying this dvd rw.It only gets 4 stars but buy this one and you will not be disappointed.

no fun for me,

This review is from: Iomega DVD +/- RW/DL 16x8x8x 40x24x40 external USB2.0 (Personal Computers)
I'm afraid i did not have a positive experience with this item. As soon as i plugged it in (to a Toshiba Laptop 'Satellite Pro A60' with 512MB) my system began to behave erratically and would, without fail, end up crashing completely.Of all the gadgets that I've connected to every orifice of my computer, this is the only one to cause it to hang - and it hangs without fail every time (all that is in doubt is the time it takes to crash). Worse than that, the DVDs it manages to burn (on the odd occasion if I'm lucky) are completely unreliable. I have wasted a bit of money trying different media brands (all high-quality) but that makes no difference. There is no firmware update available for this particular model - DVD 16x USB - that i can find from the iomega support section of their website. The reply i got from their 'technical support' was so basic and off the mark that i have decided not to pursue what is a lost cause. Finally, the drive is obviously a standard (and cheap) internal DVD writer slotted into an external box with a bit of ad-hoc usb electronics. Thus it is bulky and rather ugly (a price i was willing to pay if it worked). The hardware description in a 3rd-party burning program tells me that this is actually a LiteOn DVD burner. Whether or not that is the case, it has certainly been a waste of time (and money) for me. Lesson I have learned: don't skimp on the cash when buying an external DVD burner!!!
