Is your imaginary friend really imaginary?,
By Bev Humphrey "Libwithattitude" (Greenhithe, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Invisible Fiends - Mr Mumbles (Paperback)
This book is destined to be one of the most borrowed in the school library - because I will be recommending it to all our boys, I'm so sure they will enjoy it. It's action packed and 'grabs' you from the very start, and is a roller coaster ride of thrills right to the end. Wonderfully imaginative concept and I can't wait to read the following books in the series. Glad I didn't have an imaginary friend as a child, otherwise I would be looking around warily every time I set foot outside my front door!

Hunted by a man that doesn't exist...or does he?,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Kyle has a mother who doesn't believe a word he says, a forgetful nan in a home and a father he has never seen. It's no wonder Kyle was troubled as a child and made up an imaginary friend, a father figure, to keep him company. But when he hears scratching noises in the attic above his bedroom, and a girl around his age called Ameena later comes to his rescue, it's clear that someone from his past is out to kill him. Could it be that his invisible friend, Mr Mumbles is back and even uglier and meaner than ever? And do both his mother and nan know more than they are letting on about Kyle's past? For a kids book I found this an enjoyable read, although I do feel that being the first in a series the meat of the story is yet to come. The idea of a world named 'The Darkest Corners' where the neglected and forgotten ghosts of the past hang out, is pretty cool and I loved the scary Keller house next door - but we only touched lightly on these and I know there must be more to look forward to. An enjoyable and scary read that will keep your kids reading under the covers all night long, and possibly scared to turn the lights out, too.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
First in a series of scary novels for younger readers. Ideally aged about 8 or up.
It runs for 256 pages of relatively large print and is divided into twenty chapters. It's the story of Kyle. An ordinary boy. His father is no longer around and his mother doesnt like it when Kyle asks for information about him. And his nan has dementia so she's not easy to talk to. Kyle once had an imaginary friend who he called Mr. Mumbles. But having outgrown that phase of his life he barely remembers him now. Until the day when Mr. Mumbles reappears. And he's no longer quite as nice as he used to be. Kyle and a girl called Ameena who is new to the area have to fight to survive. And Kyle will find out a few things about his past in the process... The story is relatively complete in itself but the book sets itself up for further works in the series. It tries to be scary and it suceeds very well at that, although the parts where scary things like records getting stuck at ominous points are more so than those when Kyle is being pursued by Mr. Mumbles. But this is the kind of thing that will appeal to children who want a scary read. Although it may be a bit much for some. The plot does hint at bigger things going on here, and this will clearly be followed up in further works in the series. The chapter of the next volume is presented at the end of this one. On the basis of all this, it might be worth a look.
