Praise for Raggy Maggie:
"Raggy Maggie is a fast-paced fury of a novel, packed with genuine scares and thrills. It made me shiver more than once and I devoured it at lightning speed. I'll definitely be checking back to see how this creepy, deliciously nightmarish series develops!" DARREN SHAN

Product Description

The fourth thrilling book in this darkly funny, horror series Darren Shan called ‘deliciously nightmarish’. The first book, Mr Mumbles, is shortlisted for the Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children's Books

Kyle wakes up in hospital – which is strange, because he doesn't remember being ill. And that's not all. He's also deliriously flitting in and out of the Darkest Corners, and in the shadow version of the hospital the surfaces aren't clean, and the sharp instruments aren't used for healing.

It's Kyle's most terrifying experience yet, and it's about to get much, much worse.

The doctor will see him now…

The fourth installment of this darkly comic horror series

Doc Mortis 14 Aug 2011
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Doc Mortis is the second Invisible Fiends book I've read, and what a creepy one it was! I was expecting a certain level of horror but, quite frankly, I wasn't expecting Doctor Mortis - I bet he'd give every reader of any age a case of the goosebumps. Believe me, the word 'terror' was invented with him in mind!

Doc Mortis continued straight on from book three, The Crowmaster, with Kyle soon finding himself in a hospital in the Darkest Corners. It's there that he met I.C., a trapped (and very lovely) little boy, as well as the evil Doc Mortis and even a familiar old friend. The choices Kyle had to make were difficult and horrifying, and I was on tenterhooks for much of the book's second half. I shivered with every screech and scrape that signalled the Doc's arrival, and I was so glad I wasn't in Kyle's shoes!

Even though Doctor Mortis was like one of the creepiest horror movie monster you could think of, he didn't come across as threatening as he could have been. I think the Crowmaster had more of a presence, but I didn't find him that scary. I'm sure I've got things the wrong way round, but I'd be interested to see what other readers make of this one.

I enjoy this series more with each book I read, and I'm already looking forward to book five, The Beast. Barry Hutchison has a very twisted mind when it comes to his Invisible Fiends, and you'll find out just how twisted if you read Doc Mortis. Well done to him for being gruesome - we need more children's horror writers to follow in his footsteps!

Doc Mortis 12 Aug 2011

I'm not keen on starting books mid series, so was a little nervous about starting this one. I did find it a little confusing, the book seems to jump straight into action and carry on from the previous book and it took a while for me to get to grips with what was going on.

That said I did find it incredibly easy and gripping to read, even if it isn't my usual kind of book. Hutchison's writing speaks directly to it's intended audience of children age 9+, and boys in particular will love the gruesome and horror packed adventure. It's very visual and direct in approach, with absolutely no flowery prose to distract those who like their reading fast paced and exciting.

It is creepy, with some disturbing scenes...monster baby in a bottle for example! Although remains completely age appropriate. I think this series is a brilliant introduction to horror for younger readers, with enough scary moments to to thrill without giving too many sleepless nights. Although more sensitive readers may want to avoid!

Doc Mortis is the fourth installment in the Invisible Friends series, and judging by my experience I would suggest checking out the others first as I felt I missed a lot of background and had many questions about the situation Kyle was in. If you're looking for books for boys especially aged 9-10 plus I think this is certainly one to consider!

Dare to be scared? 2 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
Firstly I am quite flabbergasted that this series has not come to my attention before now. I am a bit of a closet horror fan, so I was extremely excited to be given the opportunity to read this. I thought it might just be OK, but I loved it. Every gruesome, gory, dark, evil word of it!

This book is part of a series, but I read it as a standalone. I like to see whether books can stand out on their own even though they are part of a series and this one definitely stood the test. I loved the idea behind the series, where your childhood imaginary friends are sent to the Darkest Corners when you forget about them and how they come back to haunt you a lot darker than they were. Such a refreshing and original storyline.

From the first chapter, you find you don't have time to catch your breath, as Kyle, just recovering from his last horrific encounter, is thrown head first, straight back into the next dangerous situation. Within a few pages, Kyle finds himself in the hospital of his worst nightmares. A hospital that would kill you rather than cure you. This is an evil place where loving and kind imaginary friends from your childhood are mutilated and turned into nastier images of their former selves. The imaginary friends go through some rather horrific and painful transformations at the hands of Doc Mortis, who is really rather gruesome and seemed to ooze evil out of every pore, especially as he takes such great pleasure in mutilating his helpless victims.

As the story progresses, you find that each chapter leaves you on a cliffhanger, keeping you so hooked you have to carry on reading the next chapter. I could not put this book down and came very close to holding my breath too long as I willed Kyle to safety, but even that was not to be as the ending left with a huge cliffhanger.

Kyle is just amazing as he doesn't seem to let all the things that happen to him, actually effect his motivation to rid the world of the evil Doc Mortis. At one point he confronts a character from his past and the turn around in events was quite surprising.

I loved the little boy, I.C. in the book. I found him adorable and funny. I was intrigued by his story and how he came to be in the Darkest Corners.

As you can tell, I really really enjoyed this one and I hope to get my hands on the rest of the series. This is definitely a book I will keep for my permanent collection.
