Invisible Circus : No Dress Rehearsal Pre-order we are sending out dec13th 2011 :) Welcome to the 'Greatest show never seen' the mysterious world of an invisible circus, on the fringes of society, hidden away in Bristol's underground art scene. Invisible Circus : No Dress Rehearsal Director: Naomi Smyth, Distributer : Future Artists Meet the ring master of this invisible circus Doug Francis as he leads Bristol's anarchist circus from margins to mainstream with the motto 'If it's not impossible, we're not interested'. The film's 3 year span takes them from chaotic squat crew to licensed building managers with huge show budgets - via rotting garages, crumbling cathedrals and a takeover of Bristol's ex-police HQ. Doug collaborates with developers to use derelict space for circus spectacles and working arts spaces. Relationships in the close team reveal the gain and the pain of success, but they're still working for free. Profit or loss? What the critics have said "Naomi's film is a look at one of the most exciting stories to happen in Bristol in recent years and she was in a unique position to document Invisible Circus supremo Doug Francis and his cohorts as they let their imaginations run riot." (Bristol Culture) "There is one circus, The Invisible Circus, who hold all and more of the magic that comes with the old and new; from the hard graft and creativity, to the luxury/despairs of liberation. I've been fascinated with them since I moved to Bristol, where they're based." (Amelia's Magazine) Directors Statement: Invisible Circus is the story of a community of artists and anarchists with a kaleidoscope of talents and a novel approach to Bristol's glut of derelict buildings. From squatting a four-storey garage and turning it into an open arts centre for four months, they earn the support of the council and end up negotiating with developers for temporary use of their buildings. tweet me @invisibleCfilm

5.0 out of 5 stars Carpe diem! 26 Sep 2011
I found this well-crafted and beautifully shot documentary inspiring. It gave me the feeling that I must immediately leap off the sofa, grab my life by both hands and shake it into submission and towards a beautiful and glittery future.

Invisible Circus: No Dress Rehearsal shows how a groups of friends with a shared love of performance, circus, music and art (and with an ideology that empty buildings are all latent big tops and theatres to be used with imaginative vigour for the common good) pool their efforts and meagre resources, and manage to create a legacy in Bristol of stunning accomplishment.

The depiction of the adversities that the group go through show clearly that it is not all juggling and chorus girls; and that some extremely hard work from all parties happens in order to make this shared vision work. But in all, this film is about how believing in the strength of your imagination, yourself and your friends can combine to prove that really, anything is possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Theatre of Life 19 July 2011
By VBS
A must see for anyone who is interested in DIY culture, the big society and the change of the modern urban landscapes through guerilla arts. This is an unusual account of 'the other side' of what in first instance could be mistaken for a film about squatting and alternative lifestyles, but what is in fact, a film about how a small group of people can really have an impact on a city without using the standard channels. The film celebrates the success of a diverse group of artists who take over long-term abandoned buildings and transform them into a social theatre of life, putting on complex pieces of installation, circus and physical theatre (eventually enjoyed by audiences of 1000 per night). Most interesting about the film is, that the director (Smyth) has somehow managed to infiltrate this culture for over 3 years and is therefore able to offer us a rich insight to the struggles, mechanics and spirit which is driving the Invisible Circus forward. The balance between film maker's narrative and subject is comfortable and at no point did I feel that the audience was forced into a point of view. Worth watching!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 15 July 2011

I really loved this great documentary, and really appreciate the opportunity to view it. It has so many implications for the importance of art in our lives in contrast to the sterile environment of business and real estate, how it brought a community together, and how once majestic old, but decayed buildings can be given new life. All this layered with the colorful personalities of the artists themselves and their amazing talent, a clear social message comes through to me: we need art and beauty and music in our lives as much as, if not more than a roof over our heads. Interestingly, some of the buildings from which the squatting performers were evicted are still vacant- a sign of the economic times. Ms. Smyth's DYI approach brilliantly captured the spirit of the troupe members, their frustrations and triumphs, and their magical performances that drew huge crowds. I hope the Invisible Circus lives continues to flourish and entertain for ages to come!

An absolutely stunning documentary that is beautifully crafted to give you the absolute raw insight into the company and how it runs behind the scenes of the performances. Shocking to see how much hard work goes on to make this work happen and absolutely inspiring for anyone to witness the passion behind the shows. A great insight into the lifestyle inflicted upon themselves as a company due to their need and passion to make and share and celebrate an art form together. Wonderful watch. Xxx

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Film! 29 Jan 2012

I can't decide what was most inspiring; how beautifully crafted the documentary was, the weird and wonderful people in it or the fact that it was made and distributed independently away from all the mainstream films that flood our screens. I've never wanted to be a penniless filmmaker more than now.
