Amazon.co.uk Review

In Be Your Own Stockbroker, stockbroker Charles Vintcent gives away the secrets of stockbroking. Work that one out. The truth is that there aren't really any secrets, just acquired knowledge about how things work. In clear, no-nonsense prose, Vintcent details all the facts necessary for dealing with sophistication in the market place. No longer will you fret over when to get your cheque in, or worry about when you should receive money from a transaction. Be Your Own Stockbroker provides a good context to the issues that arise as you ponder an investment. It will help the average reader answer all those questions most people harbour but were afraid to ask. Opening with a mechanical outline of such issues as dealing, payments and settlement, Vintcent adds layer upon layer, including a section on how shares move, before stepping into the world of derivatives. He explains in detail how futures work, warning: "Do not let anyone persuade you that you can run your own portfolio of financial futures with a few telephone calls when it is convenient to you to make them." He then proceeds to the heart of the matter: how to select shares, based on readily available information and what key signposts to be on the lookout for. By the last page, we've been lead through using charts, how recent market moves inform investment decisions and how to sharpen your investment tactics. If you want to cut out the middle man, you'd better get your skates on. --Bruce McWilliams
