Book Description

14 July 2006 The Wiley Finance Series (Book 397)
One of the fastest growing investment sectors ever seen, hedge funds are considered by many to be exotic and inaccessible. This book provides an intensive learning experience, defining hedge funds, explaining hedge fund strategies while offering both qualitative and quantitative tools that investors need to access these types of funds. Topics not usually covered in discussions of hedge funds are included, such as a theoretical discussion of each hedge fund strategy followed by trading examples provided by successful hedge fund managers.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is what it is 15 Oct 2006
By A. Pamplona - Published on
The best attribute of this book is that it doesn't mislead the book buyer by presenting a big and juicy carrot on its title, only to fail the reader expectations throughout the book. In a nutshell, if you want to know what does mean covertible arbitrage, market neutral, distressed securities, merger arbitrage and so so, you'll get a detailed answer in there.

Chances are, however, the book buyer is searching for sources of inspiration for her own investment portfolio or her hedge fund selection process. In that case, the book is not worth it because it doesn't provide any evidence of what could be the strategies that might benefit the most from the current state in financial markets or which might benefit from future states or under uncertainty, etc. The book is just a compilation of known hedge fund strategies, a technical dictionary if you will, where you get a detailed explanation of this and that but no insight on when or where.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the different strategies, but... 19 Aug 2009

If you want to have an overview of the top hedge fund strategies, this is a good book to read. It is an overview though. It does not go deep into each strategy, and at times, the explanations are superficial, or inaccurate, ex: when talking about merger arbitrage the author mentions the collapse of the tender offer for American Airlines in 1989.... but it was really the inability to finance a going private transaction for United Airlines at $180 plus per share that marked the end of the LBO driven bull market of the 80's.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Hedge Funds Make Money on their Investments 23 Oct 2007
By JJ - Published on
A great book of explanations on investment strategies. An easy read that explains each strategy a hedge fund might employ. If you want to invest in hedge funds or you are studying to someday run a hedge fund, you need to know what they do. There are so many blogs, articles, news reports out there telling how risky these vehicles are. Make your own mind up. Read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and easy to read overview 5 Nov 2007
By Lulu - Published on
To get a quick overview of hedge-fund strategies, this is the book to read. Descriptions are not so precise that you can start trading afterwards, but sufficiently detailed that get an idea of what's going on without resorting to too many unexplained lingo.
4.0 out of 5 stars A deeper look into the strategies 12 April 2013
By Alan Chong - Published on

Filippo does a good job in providing a lot of educational material in this book. The starting chapters were very well written in my opinion. The information was clear and concise and you get a lot of information from a few paragraphs. But prior to this book, I was advised by the study guide in the CHP program to tackle the 4 main readings for Level I CHP exam in an order with this book as the last. This judgement call was perfect because the prior knowledge to fully exploit the treasures of this book is much needed. (Please look at my other reviews to see the other books that were read before this)

The strategies are mentioned with sufficient detail and some real life events were depicted. It provides a perfect "hands-on" experience to the reader, but you know what they say, "you got to get your hands dirty to know the real essence of it all". Who said that? I don't know... I made it up.

But the book is a good read and definitely worth the time if you wish to absorb what-the-title-promises. An absolute good recommended and inclusion into the CHP program.
