LETTER TO READERS:

Dear Reader,

I wrote this guide as a way to share the inside scoop and give you the real deal (pun intended!) about getting a job in investment banking. When I was preparing my application years ago, I remember having to scour a number of conflicting sources and wishing that someone would just be brutally honest about the job and how to break in. Other books on the subject are written from the viewpoint of career advisors who have never been on the inside.

As someone who has applied to the analyst position from a non-traditional school, advised peers at the post-MBA level, and formally recruited both analysts and associates from various backgrounds, I have been on all sides of the fence. I know the struggles of being a student and desperately wanting to launch your career with a desirable and highly competitive position. I also know the tactics that investment bankers employ to make sure they are hiring the best and the brightest.

In this book, you will learn the truth about what goes on inside the recruiting process. You will get actionable and honest advice about how to land a job in this rewarding field. I will also share stories from the battleground to help you decide if this is the right path for you and help you become a star performer once you get the offer and join the team.

I wish you all the best, and hope you carry some piece of this advice with you on your journey wherever it takes you.

Best of luck,
Donna Khalife

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had bought that book earlier! 15 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I usually dont bother to write reviews but i want to show some appreciation. This book was very helpful in preparing my application for IB internships. There is so much wrong information on the internet that didn't do anything but confuse me. The structure of the book is very straight forward and easy to understand. I realised that a resume/CV in IB is very different compared to other industries therefore the guide on how to write a resume and cover letter was very useful. She also provides a sample resume and a sample cover letter. Furthermore, there is also a big section on interview questions, which is very useful for preparing for interviews. I would recommend to buy at least one book from her suggested reading list in order to prepare for technical interview questions. (e.g. valuation, leveraged buyouts, M&A). The only negative thing i can say about the book is that there are a couple of typos but they didn't really bother me.

All in all, this book definitely deserves 5 stars given the very reasonable price.

The book contains a wealth of information for those interested in landing an analyst or associate position in an investment bank, presented in a clear and well structured fashion. Topics covered range from how banks are structured to the recruitment process to critical factors of success before and after the job offer. The book has a down-to-earth, no nonsense approach and lets the reader in on information and tips that you won't find on the careers web page of any bank. The book is a quick read, but it contains plenty of practical advice, additional readings and ideas for follow up work. Importantly, the author focuses on what represent sustainable reasons for pursuing a career in IB and invites the reader to do the necessary soul searching before embarking in the adventure. The focus of the book is primarily Wall Street; however, all of the concepts are relevant worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights on how to get a job in investment banking 7 Dec 2011
By Chlorine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am currently a sophomore in college. I found this book extremely helpful as it provides tremendous amount of insight into the pursuit of investment banking careers from an experienced associate and recruiter's perspective who worked in high prestigious Investment Banks.

Prior to reading this book, I was not sure whether or not I would want to commit my entire youth and energy into investment banking; yet, Khalife's discussion about the advantages of a career path in investment banking combined with her personal experiences in the industry illustrate how rewarding this career could potentially be; hence, her text helped me make the decision to follow a similar pathway.

Most importantly, for those who are truly interested in pursuing a career in investment banking, this book definitely offers more than enough wisdoms on how to apply for and obtain an internship/job as an undergraduate/graduate. Firstly, the book provides a crystal clear picture of what investment banking is and how investment banking is useful and essential among other departments in the finance industry. In addition, this book demonstrates how you can stand out from competitive peers from schools across the country; this book teaches you how to network your way into investment banking positions even though you may not be from one of the target schools from which investment banks normally recruit. Towards the end of the book, the author provides you comprehensive lists of interviewing questions that have been adopted by J.P. Morgan specifically, and other investment banks in general.

Overall, this book is very easy to read. It is also entertaining as Khalife explains her points with a sense of humor. You can finish reading the book within several hours. Yet, you will highly likely need to read the book over and over again in order to fully absorb the points that she conveys. Furthermore, once you have completely understood Khalife's text, you will be ahead of you peers and will have those insightful and inspiring tips in mind while pursuing a career in investment banking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Informative and Useful Book! 14 Jan 2012
By Kevin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a freshman undergraduate and I found this book beyond useful in not only giving me a sense of what investment banking is but also covering everything I need to potentially land an investment banking internship. Whether it be a run down of a typical day in the life of an investment banking analyst or how recruiters actually pick out applicants for interviews, I feel as though I now have a much deeper understanding of the industry.

The book took me about a week to read, take notes, and synthesize all the information into a plan to land my first investment banking internship. Although I have not landed one yet since I am still a freshman, I have no doubt that if I follow the advice within this book I will significantly increase my chances for an internship sophomore year. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is either unsure if investment banking is the career for them or hopes to enter the field with a competitive edge. The information contained within this book is well worth the money you spend for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly the best out there -- must read! 5 Mar 2012
By Juan L. - Published on Amazon.com

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Investment Banking. This guide is by far the most comprehensive and accessible book on IB careers that I have seen, combining detailed advice on landing an internship / job, an insider's look at the experience, and big-picture takeaways on what it is like to work in the industry.

I started reading the guide and finished it within a few hours because I couldn't put the book down - a testament to the author's writing, both easy-to-read and filled with powerful knowledge. Additionally, the range of topics covered in the book is unparalleled, from understanding the industry, to preparing and interviewing for a position, to the role of an Analyst or an Associate.

This book has it all - must read!
