This book is more about learning and mastering your subject -any subject -than it is about investing. Hagstrom gives an overview of the topics he feels would contribute to a persons education: philosophy, literature, psychology,and the sciences (amongst others). He does relate these topics to investing briefly, but in general the book gives little insight in to actual methods of investing. Buffet's essays and the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham give more precise intructions on technique.

The book was enjoyable and worth reading if you are not already a polymath, because in the end the books purpose seems to be convincing you to become one.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, although only indirectly applicable to investing, 23 Sep 2009
This is an interesting work which has a low utility value as an 'investment book' but nevertheless manages to be erudite and informative. We are taken on a tour of different disciplines such as 'psychology' and 'literature' and informed in what ways these disciplines can influence our understanding of investing, and what lessons can be learnt from them and applied to it.

As can be imagined the discussion is perhaps too abstract to be directly useful in everyday investing practice, but I think this would be to miss the point of the book! It is there to broaden our general perspective on investing and approach it in a more thoughtful way.

As someone with a humanities background myself I actually appreciated the attempt to broaden investing beyond the perception of merely narrow financial calculation, into a more philosophical arena where deeper thinking can ultimately lead to better decisions. So the work was less practical than the the average investment book, but indeed more thought-provoking and enjoyable.
