Inverted World by Christopher Priest is one of the most haunting SF novels I've come across. A group of scientists, working on a new energy field, find themselves flung through a spacetime warp into a universe where everything is strangely inverted. Even the entire planet on which they find themselves is curving upwards and outwards, instead of round and downwards. The only way that they can survive is to haul their giant vehicle up the slope of the planet, hoping that someone will come to rescue them... And do they? You'll have to read it to find out, but the end is amazing. A fine novel.
