Product Description

THE SUFIS are to release Inventions on Ample Play (in collaboration with Burger Records in the USA) this summer. Inventions, follows debut album The Sufis , released last June which was greeted with huge acclaim by critics and radio presenters alike. It was both a Rough Trade Shops Album Of The Week & BBC 6Music's Album Of The Day. Inventions sees them stepping into an even more ambitious, psychedelic pop direction. The groop comprise of Calvin Laporte and Evan Smith with help from some their Nashville Tennessee friends. They record using old school equipment and effects some of which they have invented themselves, to create this summer slab of vinyl: I wanted to write concise pop songs, each with a unique and particular quality Calvin Laporte Tracklisting: Side 1 1. All Of The Time 2. Most Peculiar Happening Cat 3. She Said To Me 4. I'll Come To See You 5. Turn Around 6. The End Side 2 1. Alone 2. No Expression 3. Gotta Get Away 4. Wallflower 5. Nothing More To Say 6. Washed Away 'What they do next should create some seismic and significant rumbles' The Quietus 'How do you explain a teenage trio from dusty Nashville who are invigorating the surrealist whimsy of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd? Inventive and charming' The Times 'One name on every psych-lover's lips at the moment is that of The Sufis. These are meticulously constructed lysergic pop songs' Shindig!

After the mesmerising debut album, this new album takes the band even further back in time from 1968 psych to 1966 beat and groove. Unlike the first album, there are no controversial sonic landscapes to pad the record out (I thought they were amateur home studio whimsy myself, but some people liked them)- every song here is fully realised and well presented.

My only gripe with these songs is that they are almost cover versions - almost every one has a blatant lift or hook from very well known songs by the Beatles, Left Banke, Byrds and Kinks. Whether intended as a tribute or pastiche I'm not sure, but for example the track 'She said to me' is basically a cover of the Byrds version of "All I really wanna do" with a lyrical change. There is nothing here that blows you away like their first album - Tracks like "Wake Up" and "Rosalies Garden" were sublime slabs of trippy psych - Syd Barrett influenced but still creating an original and unique sound to make them the bands own.

The Sufis are certainly very capable and talented musicians and this is a very enjoyable if highly derivitive album. There's few bands that can pull off this sound so authentically, however I hope that in future they will start to inject a bit more of themselves into their music rather than be so obvious about their influences.
