great place to start 9 Dec 2010

This was a great place to start researching inventors during the colonial period/American Revolutionary days. Our only regret was that it was not longer. We did supplement with longer readings and videos on some of these inventors (a great series on video is from Schlessinger media, Inventors of the World series for Franklin and Whitney)(Looking up the 18th century in Wikipedia will supply other names of interest for further research). This book both satisfied our curiosity and gave us a thirst for more.

From the blurb at the back of the book...
"Life is hard in the young United States, but inventors were determined to make things easier. Immigrants in Pennsylvania developed a rifle that was more accurate and easier to handle. Bifocals and steam engines were born in the 1700's, too. It was the cotton gin, however, that changed history. It sped up farming in the South, but it also increased the demand for more and more slaves- a tragic, unexpected result of a great invention. "

It's Table of Contents lists the following chapters...A Better Way to Work, Life on the Frontier, Famous Early Inventors, Wartime Inventor, The Steam Era, and Inventors in the South. The book covers/ mentions the following inventors - Eli Whitney, German immigrants with their Conestoga Wagons and easier to handle rifles, Benjamin Franklin, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Banneker, David Bushnell, john Fitch and Henry Voight,James Rumsey, Robert Fulton, Oliver Evans, and Thomas Jefferson.
