NATO is smashed, Britain & Europe are under the jackbooted heel of the Volgan Republic Of Asia.
Enter True Brit wagon driver Bill Savage, his lorry commandeered by the Volgans ,he makes his way home to London, only to be told by a neighbour that his house has been blown up & his wife & children killed by a stray Volgon tank shell.
Nothing survives the ruins except Savage's shotgun (his "cannon")& Savage grabs his shooter to wage a war of resistance against the Volgs.
He starts off alone but is quickly enlisted in the British Resistance, where he heads up a section known as the "Mad Dogs", with his new best mate Silk.
The Volgan invasion is a bloodthirsty affair, with reprisal shootings, hangings, forced labour,slavery & curfews.
Echoes of the Nazi occupation of Europe, combined with Soviet political dogma, characterise the Volgans & Bill ain't gonna take it lying down (guv) !
He spreads his fight across the country & into Scotland, facing shoot outs, betrayal, torture, hair raising escapes & tragedy.
This is a hugely entertaining comic strip from the early days of 2000ad. Don't expect the finesse associated with graphic novels today. Your expectation should be of a comic strip of its time, an advert for British grit against overwhelming odds, with a few stereotypes of the UK thrown in for good measure (ie Geordies, Scots etc)
Great action, great stories & Savage is a bloke you really wouldn't want to mess with - cold & hard as a lump of British steel.
I bought this for the nostalgia value & I love it. I'm sure blokes pushing 40 (& 40 plus) will revel in this revisit to the 2000ad of their youth. Cracking.
