Product Description

***Updated edition with extra tutorial and bonus content***
Why is it that some watercolors seem to have painted themselves? The loose flow of the paint appear to magically create the scene depicted. Have you tried before to paint in a loose and free way but found it to be difficult? In this Introduction to loose watercolor you will find the tools you need to free your creativity! Finally you will be able to paint in a way that is both liberating and refreshing to you, and your viewer. No prior knowledge is assumed, just bring a willingness to relax and lose the 'fear' of making a mark on paper. Once you start painting in the way demonstrated here, you will be able to express your emotional response to a scene with energy and power.
After a brief introduction, you will see examples of loose paintings, learn the materials used (which will not break the bank!). Discover which colors the author recommends and see a complete step by step painting of a landscape. You will learn how to create inspiring sky effects easily, when to dry, and when to add highlights to add that final sparkle to a composition. Many of the techniques and ideas are somewhat unconventional! But they work, and you will be delighted with your results.

More About the Author

Roy Simmons was born in 1956 in Lincolnshire in the UK. After a short time in the Royal Navy he began a career first in office equipment and typewriter repairs (remember those), then later as a computer engineer. In all this time his hobby and passion has been creating art in many forms, primarily watercolor. In more recent days the internet has become a way of connecting both with customers and with other artists. He discovered a need for a source of photographs to inspire artists without the worry of copyright infringement, and so in 2010 started the website paintmyphoto (where artists and photographers meet). This has grown into a well established and popular social site. He also makes use of youtube to share his love of art and loose watercolor in particular.

He now lives in Essex in the UK, he has a Wife and two grown up children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, good advice 16 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In this little ebook, the author gives us the inspiration to have a go at looser watercolours. It isn't a long book, more like a really extensive magazine article, so it is easy to read in one sitting and, once inspired, get on with picking up your brushes and paints to have a go. His explanations of some of the key terms and materials used in watercolour painting are very clear and straightforward and I really like the idea of creating a protective frame for the painting.
For the price, it is much better value than buying an art magazine in my local store.

Excellent descriptions of painting procedures.

I have painted in watercolours for a number of years, but this is the first time I have attempted to paint without first drawing the scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and inspirational 9 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very easy to read guide that contains all the information you need to enjoy painting in a loose watercolour style. It's clearly written and beautifully illustrated, and is a great antidote to the fear of failure that prevents so many of us from painting and loving it.

It's a really attractive watercolour style, and this introduction is suitable for all levels of experience from beginner upwards. I've been teaching watercolour for years and I learned from and was inspired by this little book.

The demonstrations and examples shown are all landscape paintings. It would be nice to see some examples of other loosely painted subjects - still life or portraits for example. Perhaps a sequel? I would buy it.

Highly recommended. Buy it and get your paints out.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 28 Jun 2014

It was simply laid out. Very poignant comments ie horse riding! My only negative comment would be that for a beginner (which I am not) it is all a bit daunting ....

This book is quite interesting, showing the techniques of fast, loose watercolour painting. I shall be trying this method out myself and see how I go with it. Worth the buy if you are wanting to see how it is done.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think - a winner! 20 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A winner for me. It's strange how some books just hit the spot. This one is great, I have been going through a very bad 'scared to draw or paint' time, thinking everything I do is going to be rubbish so what's the use, I'm useless, why do I bother. Well I am back on track and rarin' to go! By the way one of the reviewers mentioned another book by Roy Simmons, what book is it? This little gem only cost pennies and is worth pounds. I still like books I can hold, but have downloaded lots of stuff that might just change my mind about the Kindle. I do think, because of the fact that the book is not expensive, it's worth getting just out of curiosity and who knows, you may love it also! It's what would be described as loose watercolour, but do have a go. It's simply put, very easy to follow.

I liked the amount of detail, especially the transparency or opacity of the paints. I would like to know more about these. It's a good starter book
