Product Description

Review

This book usefully clarified a number of issues that it is easy to get wrong. - British Journal of Psychotherapy

For the individual who hasn't worked in an intensive relationship before, the writing gives a helpful insight into the workings of the therapist's mind, frequently demystifying processes seldom discussed outside a supervisory relationship. - Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

Product Description

Designed for psychotherapists and counsellors in training, An Introduction to the Therapeutic Frame clarifies the concept of the frame - the way of working set out in the first meeting between therapist and client. The author, an experienced psychotherapist and teacher, uses lively and extensive case material to show how the frame can both contain feelings and further understanding within the therapeutic relationship. She takes the reader through each stage of therapeutic work, from the first meeting to the final contact, and looks at those aspects of management that beginners often find difficult, such as fee payment, letters and telephone calls, supervision and evaluation. Her practical advice on how to handle these situations will be invaluable to trainees, as well as to those involved in their training.

This book was recommended to me by a psychotherapist and was a wonderful read. It sets out the therapeutic frame and transference in a really easy way as the author, rather generously, gives examples from her practice where she has been both successful and (reassuringly) unsuccessful. For me this makes understanding the subject so much easier. I think this book is a must for any therapist.

An excellent overview of the "frame" of time, money and confidentiality etc. The author shares what she learnt from breaks in the frame with various clients. A useful glossary of terms at the end provides a quick reminder to students.
