Product Description

What is tantra? Who is qualified to practice it? How should it be practiced? What are the results? According to Buddhism, every human being has the potential to achieve profound and lasting happiness. And according to the tantric teachings of Buddhism, this remarkable transformation can be realized very quickly if we utilize all aspects of our human energy - especially the energy of our desires.

Introduction to Tantra is the best available clarification of a subject that is often misunderstood. This new edition of this classic text includes a new foreword by Philip Glass and a new cover design, but leaves untouched Lama Yeshe's excellent original text, edited by Jonathan Landaw.

Tantra recognizes that the powerful energy aroused by our desire is an indispensable resource for the spiritual path. It is precisely because our lives are so inseparably linked with desire that we must make use of desire's tremendous energy not just for pleasure, but to transform our lives.

Lama Yeshe presents tantra as a practice leading to joy and self-discovery, with a vision of reality that is simple, clear, and extremely relevant to 21st-century life.

Synopsis

Many people hold misconceptions about tantra. Lama Yeshe's lucid and precise explanation, resulting from years of study and his personal practice, dispels all of these. Demystifying this ancient tradition, he relates it to modern life and shows how tantric practice, correctly done, can transform dissatisfaction and clinging into blissful, compassionate wisdom.

Philosophy of Tantra 31 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
'Before you enter the path of Tantra, know this!' "Introduction to Tantra: The transformation of desire", explains the philosophy of Tantra, in the Buddhist way - simply and straight forward, but with a keen sense of intellect. The book shares a common view among mystics, that certain paths towards divine realization, the tantric path included, are potentially catastrophic. Therefore, it is necessary to study it's subject and follow it's practice under the guidance of a qualified teacher. As a result, the book never goes into much detail to explain the different practices. It remains an introduction. For this reason only I subtract a star! All paths are potentially catastrophic. Life itself is potentially catastrophic. Potentially triumphant too. Explain to someone the atomic bomb and the next day she comes up with the cure for cancer. Share the knowledge and let the chips fall where they may... Nevertheless, I enjoyed the the book immensely and I can easily forgive that our teachers sometimes forget what a teacher is not.

This is a fantastic introduction to the science and phillosophy of tantra. I can't over state how clearly and generally well written this book is. It covers the nature of human desire describes how it can be transformed into awakening, instead of trapping us in a cycle of thirsting for more and more without any real satisfaction. I particularly appreciated the section on deity yoga. Good stuff.

When I read this book I was taken aback: it was so beautifully written and so clear in its explaination, that I found myself staring at the picture of Lama Yeshe on the back cover, thanking him for this wonderful gift. It is very rare, in my experience, to find a book which combines such authoritative lucidity, based very much on personal experience, with heart-warming humility. Unlike many books which focus merely on the techniques of "surface" Tantra, this book explores its very essence.

Thank you Lama Yeshe for your beautiful book.

Renunciation is not the same as giving up pleasure or denying ourselves happiness. It means giving up our unreal expectations about ordinary pleasures. These expectations themselves are what turn pleasure into pain. It cannot be said too often that there is nothing wrong with pleasure. It is our grasping, exaggerating, distorting, and polluting attitude toward pleasure that must be abandoned. "e;

When we have developed our own inner purity, inner compassion, and inner love, we can then see the reflection of this purity and loving-kindness in others. But if we have not contacted these qualities within ourselves, we will see everyone as ugly and limited. For whatever we see every day in outer reality is actually nothing more than a projection of our own inner reality. "e;

the basic energy involved in this profound process of tantric transformation is the energy of our own desires. "e;
