Courses are great for the group learning aspect of percussion bands,but here is a product that allows for the dust to settle over the "weekend away" and gets you to refresh, relive and reherse the course content in a simple and efficient way.
The video presentations enhance the scripts and written material for visual learning. The Mangodrum program within this course is so intuitive and graphically represented that notation is a pleasure not an chore.

This e-book is a must for all sambistas. It gives lots of detail about the history of samba and about all the instruments usually played in a samba group. There's extensive information on techniques for playing each instrument, including photos and videos showing how to wear/carry the instrument and how to produce the correct tones.
The book gives a complete composition and videos are provided to demonstrate the rhythms for each instrument at increasing speeds, along with written scores and a simpler grid style notation for those not trained to read music. All the photos, scores and grids can be printed out for use away from the computer.
There's a fantastic percussion program, called Mango Drum, which is bundled with the e-book. This allows you to practise each instrument individually or along with the whole band and you can change the tempo and mute out different instruments.
This e-book is an all-encompassing introduction to samba batudaca which is a must for individual players or for samba groups to show to any new beginners. A great resource!

I found this a brilliant support tool for learning the basics of samba percussion. The videos really helped me with playing techniques and how to get the different tones for each of the instruments. I also found it helpful that the patterns were demonstrated slowly then built up to full speed.
The MangoDrum practice facility was very useful. I played along to a recording of my instrument and gradually increased the speed using MangoDrum's speed control and also practised against other instruments in the full samba composition.
I don't read music so the accompanying grid notation system was a bonus as I found that very easy to read but musical scores are also given for those people who can.
I think this is a great product for people starting out on Latin percussion and look forward to the next in the series.
