Product Description

Product Description

An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming with Java provides an accessible and technically thorough introduction to the basics of programming using java. The fourth edition continues to take a truly object-oriented approach. Objects are used early so that students think in objects right from the beginning. In the fourth edition, the coverage on defining classes has been made more accessible. The material has been broken down into smaller chunks and spread over two chapters, making it more student-friendly.

The hallmark feature of the book, Sample Development Programs, are continued in this edition. These provide students with an opportunity to incrementally, step by step, walk through program design, learning the fundamentals of software engineering. Object diagrams, using a subset of UML, also continue to be an important element of Wu's approach. The consistent, visual approach assists students in understanding concepts.

Coming from a procedural cobol programming background, I have found it difficult to get my head around object orientated programming concepts. This book explains object programming in a very clear manner and reinforces the explanations with illustrations to show the relationships between various objects and classes. The online learning center website to complement this book is certainly worth a visit or two. As the title says, this is just an introduction to java, but does give excellent grounding and preparation, for bigger and better java. Those who want to learn java and are totally new to object orientated programming will find this book extremely useful.

I have gone through several books in my bid to learn Java, and I have seen that the introduction of new programmers to OOP is the best approach to teaching Java. Thomas Wu's style and method of communication with simplicity and clarity especially the chapter on OOP and Software development TOTALLY demistified the Java language to me for the very first time. A lot of things started to fall in place and make sense. Reading the book, you will soon realise that Thomas knows and has mastery of Java, but more importantly he is a good teacher and communicator of OOP concepts and how these translate into Java.
I was almost giving up on the languague as I had bought books and attended two introductry courses on Java, still things have not 'jelled properly', then by chance I came across this book, which changed everything for me. After finishing this book I will recommend 'JAVA OBJECTS by J. Baker', published by Wrox press. I read it before this but it was pitched a notch higher than this book. For those new Object Oriented Programing and Java, nothing currently in the market in my view beats Thomas Wu's book. If it were possible, I will rate this book 6 stars!, believe me it is that good.

this book was highly recomended to me by my lecturer who based his 1st and 2nd semester classes around it. The book was used as course text with chapters being given to study for the next lecture. The book clearly explains the important points and has further indepth information and examples to follow through. The book has a realated web site that lets you further test your knowledge with quizes etc.

The book is clear easy to read and an invaluable tool to help you in Bsc computer Science + the book is set in such a way that an individual could easily learn object oriented programming on your own.

An invauluable, easy to read, user friendly book!
