Product Description

Product Description

This book deals with the growth, physiology, behavior and genetics of fungi including their roles in biotechnology. The main activities of fungi are covered as well as ways of preventing and controlling fungal growth. This completely revised and updated third edition is an ideal text for undergraduate courses in mycology.

From the Back Cover

Modern Mycology is an established text that continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to fungi. It will appeal to undergraduate students taking courses in microbiology, mycology and biology. This edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect the many exciting new developments in the field, notably those relating to an understanding of fungal cell biology and the application of fungal molecular genetics. The author maintains the tradition of clarity and accessibility set by previous editions, and the text is extensively illustrated with photographs and diagrams.

In keeping with modern teaching, this textbook adopts a functional approach and emphasizes the behaviour, physiology, activities and practical significance of fungi – a group of organisms distinct from all other forms of life. The book contains extensive sections on fungal pathogens of plants, animals and humans, the roles of fungi in major environmental processes, and the use of fungi as biological control agents of pests and pathogens. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Introduction to biology of fungi 11 Jan 2001
By "psaronius" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Modern Mycology , 3rd ed by J.W. Deacon, is a useful introduction to the fungi for advanced undergraduates and grad students in botany, biology or horticulture; a lay person would have to have an unusually good background in biology to get much from the book. A very brief survey of modern classification is given to the level of division, with the rest of the text focusing on various aspects of the biology of the fungi. Various biochemical aspects of fungi are particularly well covered and there are interesting treatments of decomposer communities, mycorrhizae and fungi as pathogens. The book is copiously illustrated with clear line drawings and black and white photos and there are 23 beautiful color plates. I would like more systematic information, but I understand that this is the area of mycology most in flux.
