Product Description

Product Description

Covering recent theoretical developments in industrial organization and public choice theory, this is a complete textbook for intermediate microeconomics courses. The mathematical development of results lends vigour to its traditional strength: verbal and geometric presentation of key concepts. The clarity and brevity of exposition that made the book popular have been retained.

From the Back Cover

Your complete textbook of Microeconomic principles, theory and application

This new edition builds a comprehensive picture of the microeconomic tools required to solve a wide range of problems by using an innovative combination of written, illustrative and mathematical analysis.  It helps the reader to think like an economist - in particular demonstrating how individuals, firms and policy-makers decide their best course of action.

Microeconomics is all new:

  • New Content – detailed discussions of choice in the face of risk; corporate governance; game theory; and the economics of information.
  • New Feature – Boxes of worked examples develop key ideas in the text and so bridge the gap between less formal presentation and mathematical analysis.
  • New Structure – Streamlined and modernised into eight balanced parts, the book has been reorganised to place valuable emphasis on evolving areas of the subject, whilst retaining core topics standard to microeconomic courses.

Saul Estrin is a Professor of Management and Head of the Department of Management at The London School of Economics and Political Science.

David Laidler is Fellow in Residence at the C. D. Howe Institute in Toronto and Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Western Ontario.

Mike Dietrich is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Sheffield University

Microeconomics caters for all students studying the subject, challenging the most able reader whilst leaving no student behind.

Visit www.pearsoned.co.uk/estrin to access the companion website for Microeconomics containing a large range of additional resources for both students and lecturers.

For students these include:

  • Extra practice and self-assessment problems developed out of boxes in the text
  • Solutions to selected problems
  • Useful economics-related websites
  • A glossary of key terms used in the text

First of all, I must admit that my major isn't related to economics, so I had little previous knowledge of economics when I began reading the book. I was simply looking for an introduction to microeconomics and sort of randomly bumped into this book. I found that the authors' exposition of various topics is not very clear and the explanations are sometimes lacking sufficient detail. More importantly, the order of presentation needs improvement; quite often I found myself going back and forth in the pages of the book, trying to understand what the authors want to say. If you are looking for an introductory textbook in microeconomics, you can probably find something much better (I might suggest one of Varian's books, depending on your mathematical background; I found "Intermediate
Microeconomics" quite good).

I did not major in economics but, regardless, i think it is safe to say that this book is not written in the most "approachable" style. It does not give the impression that economics could be an even remotely interesting subject to study. It speaks in a rather stuffy, third person manner and uses unecessarily round about and complex ways to say things that I have seen expressed in a much clearer and interesting way in other books. At least for beginners, I would say that this is not the best book to start out with.

This book is excellent if you already have a sound introductionary knowledge on microeconomics and mathematics (basic algebra and calculus).
It covers the subjects using conventional diagrams and verbal explanations, that are complemented by mathematical extensions.
Though the mathematical part is in separate sections and you can follow the book without covering them, I think those sections
are the book main stength, so I would recomment this book to those looking for more precise modelying in an intermediate microeconmics course.
I don't think it's suitable as an introduction to economics.
It can be a good idea to combine it with a less mathematical text for concepts and examples, such as Wyn Morgan et al. book and the one by Robert Pindyck.
