Product Description

Review

'Matthew Innes' new survey fills a nagging void for teachers of early medieval history ... He engages in a dialogue with the sources and literature and with his audience as well ... leading students to an appreciation of current views and competing scholarly interpretations ... The bibliographical essays are a superb introduction to the literature of the field, invaluable to introductory and advanced students as well as seasoned professionals.'  - John McCulloh, Kansas State University.

"Innes has done early medieval scholarship a great service. By surveying and synthesising recent research covering such a long period, his book will help others to connect the dots and draw conclusions of their own... This is a very important book... an excellent resource for teachers and students." - Warren C. Brown, English Historical Review

Key topics discussed are:

  • why the Roman Empire broke down so irrevocably in Western Europe
  • how it came to be replaced by radically different political systems
  • why the city-based state structure of antiquity was replaced
  • how and why the division between civilians and the military broke down
  • the conversion of Western Europe to Christianity and the establishment of the church as the central social institution
  • what made Western Europe's experience so distinctive in this period.

The truth about early medieval Europe 1 Jan 2010
By Arnold Lelis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Those who work in early medieval studies already know Matthew Innes as one of the foremost practitioners in the field, currently. In _Introduction to Early Medieval Europe: The Sword, the Plough and the Book_, Innes has produced an overview of the crucial period of transition from the Late Roman period to the end of the Carolingian era, which is appropriate not just for professional historians but for advanced undergraduates and members of the educated reading public as well.

Innes shows clearly the differing degrees of change and continuity in the major regions of the Late Roman and post-Roman world. Among the highlights are his description of Italy's transformation from an imperial heartland to a frontier province of the shrunken Byzantine continuation of the Late Roman system, his treatment of the political structure of Merovingian Gaul, and his brilliant summary of the latest insights into the creation of the Avar - Slav world in southeastern Europe. Innes' _Introduction to Early Medieval Europe_ can be read usefully alongside Michael McCormick's _Origins of the European Economy_ and Chris Wickham's _Framing the Early Middle Ages_.

For researchers as well as for students, extremely helpful are the extensive bibliographical essays at the end of every chapter. I have used this book successfully as the major text in a 300-level course on Early Medieval Europe, and will probably use it again.

Better Than Chocolate... 24 Sep 2011
By Comicfairy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an Undergraduate student majoring in Medieval studies (with plans to proceed to Graduate studies), this book tasted like dessert. Innes is concise and fully informative, presenting the full spectrum of opinion before serving up his own. The timelines, maps, and chapter summaries were helpful, but the 'cherry on top' was the bibliographies found at the rear of each chapter, which offering quick summaries and recommendations for further reading based on Innes' extensive knowledge of the time period. Clearly in his element and a master of his field, any student of the Middle Ages (and early to late Antiquity) should be grateful to his fresh 'retelling' of history. My only complaint is that, given the 2004 publication date, I cannot have an updated edition to fawn over! If you're hungry for new knowledge rather than staid old accepted views, pick up a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.
