Review

Review(s) from previous edition
"Gardner is to be congratulated for having produced this stimulating introduction which... will be a very valuable addition to any serious library in the topic, as well as providing an introduction which trusts teachers would do well to recommend enthusiastically to their students.
- C.E.F. Rickett, The Cambridge Law Journal, Vol 50 No.2 (Jul 1991), pp369-371

"Gardner's book... is written in a clear, attractive style. Gardner... deal[s] with difficult topics with clarity and depth. He gives a clear treatment of the cases, along with an effective critique, and he discusses the issues in the light of the political models. In short, he does succeed in carrying out the Series' aim of providing 'a general perspective of legal ideas and problems which will make their detailed study more rewarding'... [It is] well written, careful and insightful."
- T.G. Youdan, Writing on the Law of Trusts, in The Oxford Journal of Legalu --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

This second edition of Simon Gardner's Introduction to the Law of Trusts provides a concise and analytical overview of account of the English law of trusts, drawing out especially this area's underlying concerns and suggesting ways in which the rules can be explained and evaluated. By providing law students with an intelligible framework within which to understand this subject's otherwise abstract and elusive material, it offers them a valuable starting point for this part of their work. It is ideal for using alongside or after more detailed study of the subject, as a resource for developing a more rounded and effective appreciation of the rules, and a critical apparatus for appraising them. It also provides an accessible overview of trusts for those not primarily engaged in this area of study, especially if they have some understanding of law. In this second edition, the book has been brought up to date, and given a substantially revised set of critical perspectives.

Some jargons used in this book are misleading...for example, proprietary obligation, dual ownership and so on. How could it be possible to attach an adjective, 'proprietary', before a legal concept (obligation) that only produces personal rights. Moreover, the first part of this book is so boring and useless for beginners. I would rather recommend the one written by Professor James Penner.
