Product Description

Synopsis

This book presents an introduction to programming interactive computer graphics, with an emphasis on game development, using real-time shaders with DirectX 9.0. The book is divided into three parts that explain basic mathematical and 3D concepts, show how to describe 3D worlds and implement fundamental 3D rendering techniques, and demonstrate the application of Direct3D to create a variety of special effects. Features include: understand basic mathematical tools used in video game creation such as vectors, matrices, and transformations; discover how to describe and draw interactive 3D scenes using Direct3D and the D3DX library; learn how to implement lighting, texture mapping, alpha blending, and stencilling using shaders and the high-level shading language (HLSL); explore a variety of techniques for creating special effects, including vertex blending, character animation, terrain rendering, multi-texturing, particle systems, reflections, shadows, and normal mapping; find out how to work with meshes, load and render .X files, program terrain/camera collision detection, and implement 3D object picking; and review key ideas, gain programming experience, and explore new topics with the end-of-chapter exercises.

The example files are available at the book's website. These files contain full source code for every sample application.

The second version of this book is even better than the original one. It teaches you on how to use vertex shader and pixel shader with detailed examples, which is good as fixed-function method will be dropped in DirectX 10. It also has several chapters to describe the use of X library to animate skinned mesh, shadow map, environment reflection map and displacement map.

Only minor complain is that the source codes downloaded from the publisher website can be only opened with Visual Studio 2005 (can even not be opened by Visual Studio 2003), although it should not be a too big problem for experienced C++ coder to rebuild the solution / project.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for games programmers 12 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
Undoubtedly the best-written and most concise guide to DirectX programming available today, Luna is the defacto manual for Microsoft's PC API. Starting from first principles with an excellent primer on the mathematics of 3D game development and moving through drawing simple triangles, texture-mapping, lighting and ultimately complex techniques such as High-Level Shader Language (HLSL), it makes for a complete introduction for moderately experienced coders.

The examples are superb and clearly explained, with well-written code available on the book's website. By the time the reader has finished it, they should be quite capable of producing a basic 3D game that utilises all the graphical techniques modern videogames employ, including realtime shadows, dynamically changing water effects and effective lighting.

While this does not cover the more advanced techniques available with the latest DirectX editions, it should give such a grounding to the reader as to allow them to understand the API well and pick up additional D3D skills as needed. An indispensible reference for students, professionals and hobbiests alike.
