Product Description

Review

'This book fits a very much needed slot as it is written at a level that is much easier to understand than the classic old texts on dislocations...and is, for that reason, ideal for both undergraduates and beginning or interdisciplinary graduate students.' --Kevin J. Hemker, Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

'One of the most striking advantages of the book is the concise and lucid text...There are many books dealing with dislocations but only one up-to-date introduction. It is warmly recommended to teachers and students in solid state sciences' --Crystallization Technology

'As we grow older, we tend to grow fatter but wiser. This is certainly the case of the 4th edition of 'Introduction to Dislocations'...the book is excellent value and there is no excuse why every student of metallurgy should not be familiar with its contents, and every researcher have it readily to hand.' --Steel Times

Product Description

Dislocations are defects in the crystal structure of important engineering materials, such as metals, ceramics and semi-conductors, that strongly influence the properties of these materials.

Research on dislocations was intense when the first edition of this classic work was published in the 1960s. By incorporating later developments in subsequent editions whilst retaining a concise, accessible style, Introduction to Dislocations has become established as a key resource for students, graduates and researchers. No other book on the topic is as credible and, with this new edition, as up-to-date.

Introduction to Dislocations is widely recognized to provide the essential knowledge base required for further study, research and technological application in the field. This update brings the book's coverage, references and context in line with the latest developments to ensure it remains a core reference for all those studying and working in the field today.

  • Long-established academic reference by an expert author team, highly regarded for their contributions to the field.

  • Uses minimal mathematics to present theory and applications in a detailed yet easy-to-read manner, making this an understandable introduction to a complex topic.

  • Unlike the main competition, this new edition includes recent developments in the subject and up-to-date references to further reading and research sources.

I used this book extensively in writing my Ph.D. thesis introductory chapters on deformation theory. Good clear diagrams helped in reminding me of the long forgotten dislocation theories of my undergraduate studies. It is perfect as an introductory source, small, handy and uncluttered by the large volume of literature on dislocation theory that could have been included. When looking for a particular topic I found that I ended up reading almost the entire book due to the ease in back tracking through the logical sequence of the chapters. Although meant as an introductory text, I have found that it is also an excellent reference source.

Very good elementary representations of dislocation theory. 4 April 1999

Much better and easier to understand than the many other classical dislocation theory books. It is also very comprehensive, although a little outdated due to its publication date.

Clear, concise, and well-written 5 Jun 2008

This is an excellent introductory text on dislocation theory. The author does a good job of outlining fundamental materials principles before jumping into defects. The diagrams and images used are top-notch -- if only one could capture such good examples in practice! The latter half of the text covers some information on other types of defects (tilt boundaries, stacking faults) as well as numerous characterization techniques. Recommended!
An excellent introduction to dislocations 5 Sep 2011

I bought this book to learn more about the subject of dislocations. I've never taken any course in dislocaitons, but i found this book (at least the first four chapters) relatively simple to read and understand. This book provides a good entry-level introduction to dislocations. It is recommended as a first read if you do not have previous background in dislocations.
