Good for its time but dated now,

When this book first came out it was the only accessible book on bioinformatics but now there are many better texts available that target the same audience. It does not go into any of the details of the methods and has limited coverage of a field that has changed dramatically.
If you are an undergraduate student then you would do better buying Lesk or Krawetz and Womble.

This is a concise and well-written introduction to the rapidly advancing field of bioinformatics. A suitable target audience would be final year undergrads, postgrads and doctoral workers looking to be brought up to speed in this key area. Recommended, and great value for money.

Not really worth spending money and time. The price is way too much for a book of this volume. Authors spent too much writing on superficial (length of several paragraphs) introduction to various softwares and databases (e.g., database XXX is produced by YYY research center using ZZZ format, etc.).Chapter 3 (Protein information resources), however, was worth reading. It presents good figures and tables on various patterns (e.g., pattern, profile, fingerprint, HMM, block) in protein structure. Also, no errata information is provided from publisher. |
