About the Author

John Creasey (1908 - 1973) was the world’s most prolific author.*

'The King of Crime’ wrote 562 crime and mystery books, selling more than 80 million copies worldwide in 28 languages over five decades. His most famous characters include The Baron, Inspector West and Gideon. The Creasey Dagger is the UK’s top award for first time crime novelists with winners including Patricia Cornwell and Minette Walters.

Creasey is an inspiration to the aspiring but as yet unpublished author. He had 743 rejection slips before his first book was accepted. He never stopped believing in himself and he never gave up.

He wasn’t afraid to take risks either – writing under 10 different names and changing styles with each character.

At least 5000 different editions of Creasey’s work were published in 28 different languages. There are 11 different series, four of them (Roger West, the Toff, the Baron and Patrick Dawlish) with either 50 titles reached or very close, two series (Dr Palfrey and Department Z) with over 30 titles, and the great Gideon with 21. A further 50-odd titles have been published as written by Michael Halliday.

All his books were written first in longhand on specially ruled paper and revised five or six times before going to the publisher - often 12 months after the first draft was finished.

John Creasey lived near Salisbury, Wiltshire, England on land once given to Sir John Botenham by King John. He was married four times, had three sons, three daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren.

*The technical bit: Barbara Cartland wrote more books than John Creasey—an average of eight books a year, totalling 623 in 77 years of writing. Creasey wrote 13 books per year in 41 years of writing, making him 171% more prolific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing the Toff, 14 May 2011

John Creasey was an extremely prolific author, writing over 600 crime, mystery and thriller books under various pen names, and it is great to see some of his books being released on kindle. "Introducing the Toff" is the first in the series featuring the Hon Richard Rollison and was originally published in 1938, the 'Golden Age' of crime fiction. As such, the Hon Richard Rollison is very typical of that era of crime writing - the Toff is not linked to the police, but is independently wealthy and has a 'hatred of dullness' which leads him to travel the world and try to 'suppress crime'. This seems unrealistic now, but if you think about other 'gentlemen' detectives of the era - such as Lord Peter Wimsey, the Toff is a product of his time, so relax and prepare to be entertained!

This book has certainly got much to offer in the way of entertainment and excitement. The story starts in the East End of London, where criminals abound. There, the Toff is much feared and the mere mention of his name strikes terror. When the Toff comes across a murder on the Chelmsford Road, the Toff is involved in a shoot out. He discovers the body of a man in a wrecked car and a womans shoe lies on the road. Investigation leads him to Achmed Dragoli, an Egyptian criminal, and Garrotty - a wonderfully over the top Chicago 'big shot'. Mention of "the Black Circle" brings the Toff to realise that something big is planned. Along with the police, we are led into a plot involving kidnaps, car chases, drugs and, of course, a beautiful woman who needs to be rescued. There is virtual non stop action and the book comes to a suitably exciting conclusion. Great fun and highly recommended. If you like this, John Creasey has written many other series, such as Gideon of Scotland Yard, Dr Palfrey and The Baron. I look forward to discovering more of his work as they are released in kindle editions.
