Tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett is a formidable musician, composer and graduate of the hard bop school. He has been making waves on the British jazz scene for some time with his intense and committed Tubby Hayes-influenced performances. For his debut album, Spillett has re-assembled the rhythm section from his last Ronnie Scott quartet - John Critchinson on piano, Andy Cleyndert on double bass and drummer Martin Drew. They are the perfect choice and foil behind his driving solos, as he presents a programme of tunes associated with Hayes as well as a handful of similar styled originals.
