Each chapter concludes with a selection of exam-style questions, giving students lots of practice for the real thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that I was looking for 22 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I somehow ended up with a job which requires a degree of mathmatical knowledge without ever having taken a maths A-level. So I had been looking for a suitable textbook to get myself up to speed for a while. I looked at a lot and this is the only one that really started with the basics. The style is very concise, clear and methodical (apart from one, bizarre bit where the music for a mnemonic to help you remember a formula is written out - I don't know how that slipped in). There are also lots of questions, ranging from the very basic, so you can test what you've just learned, to the more involved, meaning that you have to apply your new knowledge. My one frustration is that the answers to the more involved questions aren't always given, and if they are, then there's no description of the steps necessary to reach them. Still, I guess that full descriptions would have made the book twice the size and I'm probably unusual in studying this stuff on my own outside of a classroom. Despite this small criticism, I'm writing this review to reassure anyone in a similar situation to me that this is the book that they're looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well laid out 17 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is particularly helpful if you've not got a great amount of support, ie if you're planning on starting a course after a long break from education, or if you're an a-level student who feels that the teacher isn't speaking in the same language as you. There are enough examples as well as explanation that if you can't pick it up from the latter, you can with the former.
