Product Description

Product Description

What is psychology? When did it begin? Where did it come from? How does psychology compare with related subjects such as psychiatry and psychotherapy? To what extent is it scientific? "Introducing Psychology" answers all these questions and more, explaining what the subject has been in the past and what it is now. The main "schools" of thought and the sections within psychology are described, including Introspection, Biopsychology, Psychoanalysis, Behaviourism, Comparative (Animal) Psychology, Cognitive Approaches (including the Gestalt movement), Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Humanism. The key figures covered include: Freud, Pavlov, Skinner, Bandura, Piaget, Bowlby, Maslow and Rogers, as well as many lesser-known but important psychologists.

From the Author

Full of cartoons and illustrations: a complete introduction.
"Introducing Psychology" is now read and used on every continent on the planet! This International Bestseller is enjoyed by Psychology students of all ages and levels, as well as by other professionals and general readers. It provides a complete overview of Psychology, both theoretical and practical, including details of some of the most important research. In the UK it is recommended by Universities to Psychology undergraduates, as well as by Advanced level ("A-Level") and Basic level ("GCSE", "NVQ", etc.) examiners and assessors. As with the other carefully produced books in this extensive, lively illustrated series (by Icon-Penguin), "Introducing Psychology" attempts to provide thought-provoking insights for the benefit of both relative beginners AND those with previous knowledge of the subject. There is no other Psychology book like it on the international market! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A Good Jump Start 24 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is a pretty good introduction into the basics of psychology. It explains the different perspectives and approaches to studying the mind and the different therapies used to treat disorders and undesirable behavior. The illustrations are rather helpful, and there are insights into the history of this science. It's worth a quick study for someone who may be thinking of making psychology their college major or considering therapy or counseling for him/herself.

A brilliant book! 31 May 2003
Format:Paperback
The whole series of these books by Icon is extremely good but, even by their high standards, "Introducing Psychology" stands out as being a masterpiece! The author has amazingly managed to summarize the whole of psychology in an easy-to-read, concise and entertaining way. The illustrations are superb, guiding the reader through all the main sections of psychology with valuable and memorable insights. The book is packed with information and is cleverly humourous. I highly recommend it to anyone new to psychology or wanting to learn more. I only wish it was longer!

Format:Paperback
I bought this book alongide my textbook at the beginning of September when this latest edition had just come out and I was not disappointed, from reading this book it gave me a good overview of what to expect from my course and provided me with a basic knowledge of the aproaches and other parts of psychology. I would reccommend to anyone considering to take a course in psychology as well as those who want to know a basic overview of the subject.

Brilliant book - but the shrinks have shrunk!
Not much to add to all the other positive reviews concerning the contents itself - I'd rate this as one of the best volumes from the whole Icon/Totem series, and anyone who wants a... Read more

Hmmm
I'm not 100% about this. It's a lot smaller than it looks in the picture (should be noted in the product description really) - not the usual size of a book, about half an A5... Read more

Not impressed..
I hate the way that information is presented. I didn't realise it would be quite so cartoon(y) etc. If you are a visual learner then this book may be more suited to your learning... Read more

not what i was hoping for
my main criticism of this book is that there is no contents page, you can't read a chapter at a time as it jumps from one thing to another without any structure. Read more

Psychology, again
I bought this book when I was doing an introduction to psychology. I found it very useful and well worth the money. Recommended

Very thorough and not a comic book!
Let's be clear about one thing from the very start: these books - Icon in the UK and Totem in the USA - are not comic books, despite what some reviewers say. Read more
