Product Description

Product Description
The ideas of psychoanalysis have permeated Western culture. It is the dominant paradigm through which we understand our emotional lives, and Freud still finds himself an iconic figure. Yet despite the constant stream of anti-Freud literature, little is known about contemporary psychoanalysis. "Introducing Psychoanalysis" redresses the balance. It introduces psychoanalysis as a unified "theory of the unconscious" with a variety of different theoretical and therapeutic approaches, explains some of the strange ways in which psychoanalysts think about the mind, and is one of the few books to connect psychoanalysis to everyday life and common understanding of the world. How do psychoanalysts conceptualize the mind? Why was Freud so intersted in sex? Is psychoanalysis a science? How does analysis work? In answering these questions, this book offers new insights into the nature of psychoanalytic theory and original ways of describing therapeutic practice. The theory comes alive through Oscar Zarate's insightful and daring illustrations, which enlighten the text. In demystifying and explaining psychoanalysis, this book should be of interest to students, teachers and the general public.

4.0 out of 5 stars A word of warning, 25 Dec 2008
By Lark (Ireland) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent introduction to classical psycho-analysis, infact it would have served brilliantly as "An Introduction of Freudian Analysis" but in respect of developments, departures and differences with an essentially Freudian perspective there are some grave "sins of omission".

All the great originators or developers of the theory who are featured are all essentially Freud loyalists, including Jung (Freud split with Jung before Jung split with Freud).

Some of the most innovative developments dont really get a look in at all, including the dirth of social perspectives, Bowlby and attachment theory get barely a foot note (although Winnecott is mentioned its a similar foot note, simply saying he was a prolific writer), Karen Horney is afforded only a brief mention too and the focus is upon contesting penis envy, nothing in a way of the great theories about neurotic personality structures, disturbed social relations or cultural theories which she originated. Eric Fromm is conspicious by his total abscence, although some of his key influences, such as Harry Stack Sullivan are mentioned, again only barely and briefly.

It is an otherwise good, clear and concise introduction, some of the illustrations are pretty strange and even creepy at times but it remains both entertaining and enlightening. Perhaps I expected too much from an introduction but it does seem to be firmly rooted within the Freudian camp and positively an advocate of a lot of seriously contested theory and practices (such as all the sketches of analytical practitioners chairs seated behind couches, one even features a wall, while its a perfect illustration of Freudian thinking its totally anathema to a lot of therapeutic developments since which are firmly rooted within attachment theory, social psychology, social processes and developmental psychology).
