Product Description

An easy to read, jargon-free introduction to mental health, this practical guide is written for qualified and non-qualified practitioners. The authors explain key concepts in easily understandable language, accessible even to those with no prior knowledge of the subject. They detail the major mental health disorders and the issues and implications surrounding them, and include separate chapters on personality disorder and self-harm. They provide in-depth practical information on: the Mental Health Act; diagnosis and medication; risk assessment and management; violent and challenging behaviour; communication between agencies. This guide is full of useful information, practical suggestions, and strategies for anyone working with people who are experiencing mental illness. It will prove invaluable to housing workers, support workers, probation officers, prison health care officers, student nurses and anyone coming in to contact with mental health issues.

This is a great introductory book to Mental Health. Certain chapters within the book have case notes, which I feel helps the reader to look at all aspects of the individual's life and not just the illness. At the end of each case are `points for reflection' - which I have found very useful with my studies, as it has helped me consider all aspects in a plan of care for someone, which can sometimes be overlooked. Also included in the book, is information on risk assessments and management, as well as diagnosis and interventions, together with references and useful resources. There is a lot packed into this book, but it is all set out in clear sections and uses understandable terminology.
