Product Description

Product Description

An easy to read, jargon-free introduction to mental health, this practical guide is written for qualified and non-qualified practitioners. The authors explain key concepts in easily understandable language, accessible even to those with no prior knowledge of the subject. They detail the major mental health disorders and the issues and implications surrounding them, and include separate chapters on personality disorder and self-harm. They provide in-depth practical information on: the Mental Health Act; diagnosis and medication; risk assessment and management; violent and challenging behaviour; communication between agencies. This guide is full of useful information, practical suggestions, and strategies for anyone working with people who are experiencing mental illness. It will prove invaluable to housing workers, support workers, probation officers, prison health care officers, student nurses and anyone coming in to contact with mental health issues.

About the Author

Caroline Kinsella has 23 years of experience of working in the NHS with patients with mental problems. For the last 13 years she has been working with mentally disordered offenders. Currently Caroline works as a Community Forensic Mental Health Nurse for a NHS Trust in Dorset. Connor Kinsella worked as a mental health nurse in London for twelve years and established JCK Training in February 1998. He has spent most of his career working at a senior level with mentally disordered offenders and acutely disturbed 'high risk' clients. He continues to work with a demanding clinical caseload as part of the Blandford Community Mental Health Team in Dorset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Mental Health, 16 May 2009

This review is from: Introducing Mental Health: A Practical Guide (Jkp Resource Materials) (Paperback)
This is a great introductory book to Mental Health. Certain chapters within the book have case notes, which I feel helps the reader to look at all aspects of the individual's life and not just the illness. At the end of each case are `points for reflection' - which I have found very useful with my studies, as it has helped me consider all aspects in a plan of care for someone, which can sometimes be overlooked. Also included in the book, is information on risk assessments and management, as well as diagnosis and interventions, together with references and useful resources. There is a lot packed into this book, but it is all set out in clear sections and uses understandable terminology.
