Best introduction/best-of I've seen,
By
This review is from: Introducing The Incredible String Band (International Release) (Audio CD)
This is really a pretty good introduction; there is some great stuff here from their best phase. There are other 'introduction to's and best-ofs going about, but they seem to have been put together by record company people who don't know their music. To most people who love the ISB, after the first 4 or 5 albums, there was the occasional gem and still some charm, but there was a huge percentage of dross; and dross is what you get a lot of, when someone randomly picks tracks from their entire career for a compilation. And dross is not going to win them any new fans.
This stuff is the real deal, though; it's not the compilation I would have made up myself, but more than half of it is, and the rest's fine. This is a good representation of what fans love about the ISB, and a good place to start.

Incredible,

The music stands the test of time. I thought revisting this might just tip into rose-tint and nostalgia. But the selection here are quirky and edgier than I remembered. Good. I'd recommend it to ageing hippies and younger.

Another Country,

Maybe you had to be there in the 1960's to overlook the ISB's faults, but this compilation readily evoked some wonderful (and at times ramshackle) gigs. I had forgotten Colouring Book, a song which my children think is too simple; they haven't listened to the lyrics: 'The purple sail above me catches all the strength of Summer/Fishes stop and ask me where I'm bound/I smile and shake my head and say 'My little ship is sinking/ but I kind of like the sea that I'm on /and I don't mind if I do drown'';-not as simple as they think. The outstanding musicalicality and integration of the sitar and other exotic instruments should make us forget the descent into whimsy and cults. There is a nice Youtube of the boys singing with Julie Felix which turns back time nicely. Buy this if you need to go back to 1967 for a quick break.
