I'd bought Harry Chapin's LP "Short Stories", the one with the brilliantly drawn/illustrated cover, a long time ago - for the wonderful track W.O.L.D., which I'd heard on the radio.
Recently, I wanted to investigate and get a CD with that track on. Introducing ....Harry Chapin was the budget release I bought from Amazon, as it seemed to offer just what I was looking for.
Alarmingly anti-fashion, (the CD cover photo is worryingly anti-fashionable!) Mr Chapin seems to have his small but elite gathering. To me, he hits the spot for a particular mood/zone; when I want a quiet reflection on contemporary life and not to be shouted at about it in the process.
His stories, sung simply but beautifully with evocative and sympathetic instrumentation are a joy and are intelligent, without baffling and OTT metaphors etc. He's far more easy listening (a worrying two words for me to write!) than many who have such messages to get across. I thought of Gerry Rafferty at one point and then...Billy Joel. Yes, definitely an understated BJ. And an occasional sense of Neil Diamond urgency, but without the vocal gravel?
If you enjoy and appreciate the likes of say, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver perhaps and something that'll play pleasantly in the background but bear fruits lyrically if you want to tune into them and hear what messages they convey, Harry Chapin could be the very singer-songwriter for you.
