very nice book, although it has some errors (this challenges you to tackle any obstacles yourself) but it gets to the point and achieves its goal. recommending it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it! 10 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Excellent intro to Maya 2013.
My only complaint is that, for a beginner, it can be confusing and almost too advanced but I guess that's how you learn :)
Why I only gave 4 stars? Well because of this book being updated for the latest version (think this book has been around since v. 2010) some tutorials are misleading and even tell you to use certain tools or menu items that now have moved or have been renamed from previous versions!

But stick with it! Even though sometimes it may feel like your in CSI trying to work stuff out! :)

3.0 out of 5 stars GUI denial? 30 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book is stated to be an introductory rather than advanced course. As far as I have read, it seems reasonably structured for this, but the author instructs using keyboard commands or "shortcuts" rather than the icons of the GUI. GUIs were intended to replace keyboard interaction some 28 years ago so this is at best - disappointing.

Worse, unlike a pictographic icon, nothing is memorable to a novice by ctrl-a or press 5 for ...? This is annoying especially in study away from the screen that further diminishes hope of memory retention.

To suggest learning shortcuts and add them as an appendix or beside the currently undisplayed and unmentioned icon would be an improvement, but currently the GUI, designed to make a program intuitive and easier to learn, seems ignored at every opportunity. For a book which is aimed at new users this is frankly bizarre.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the best book for introducing Maya 2 Oct 2012

i am very satisfied with this book. It's written very understandably. Approach that I like. Not too hard and not simple. Perfect book - from beginner to intermediate level. After this book, i recomend "Mastering Autodesk Maya 2013". That 2 book - master level.
And I need to say, I am very satisfied with speed of delivery. I am in Serbia, books have arrived in 20 days. It's too good. Bravo Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learned a lot 15 Feb 2013
By Matthew C. Fraley - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has been great for me. I finished the projects in this book and worked on my own models. I am not very artistic with pen, pencil, etc. Following this book and the techniques I not only created ever model in the book but can actually create some nice ones of my own.

I like how this book goes step by step. Then it has a section of the model that you are supposed to do yourself like chapter 4 where the author say: "now I am kicking you out on your own". It was so easy. And in other places if I found myself in a little trouble I could go back and see what the author had instructed before and then finish.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone just beginning with Maya.
