Book Description

21 April 1988 0521319145 978-0521319140 Student Manual/Study Guide
Intonation in Context is for upper-intermediate and advanced learners of English who want to improve their intonation. It aims to make learners aware of the main features of intonation and provides enjoyable activities for both controlled and freer practice in a range of conversational situations. Intonation is presented as a system which has an important communicative function in any interaction between speaker and listener. Learners first explore the meaning conveyed by the parts of this system before going on to a variety of production exercises. The book is intended to be used alongside any general coursebook to provide a systematic and accessible introduction to this often neglected area of pronunciation. The easy-to-follow explanations assume no specialist knowledge of the subject and the accompanying CD provides clear models, making this an excellent choice for both classroom use and self-study.

Until the ground-breaking research of David Brazil in the 1970s and 80s, the intonation system of English had been a mystery. Since Brazil's death in 1995 it seems to have been largely consigned to oblivion once again. This is very unfortunate, as a mastery of the intonation of English is indispensable for any Speaker of Other Languages wishing to attain native speaker competence. The fact that Intonation In Context (first published in 1988) is still the most effective teaching/learning tool for this important area (probably better than Brazil's own course) is testimony to this neglect. At no point does the significance of Intonation in English seem to have filtered down into the world (industry) of mainstream TEFL/TESOL, which persists in including 'snippets' of phonemics and phonology into its textbooks in meaningless isolation, and without a clear understanding of the interface between phonemics and phonology. Basically, phonemics (idealised standard word pronunciation) is subject to 'distortion' in spoken discourse, such discourse being governed by the intonation dynamic. How and why this is the case is explored step by step in this course. The basics of the intonation system (tone units, prominent syllables etc.) are introduced in the only way possible, i.e. in context, and the basic tone-types are presented clearly and effectively. The design of the course is frankly excellent, with ample opportunities for the student to listen to and repeat intonation features whilst analysing the dynamics. Such understanding is then applied within controlled practice within each chapter and this is supplemented by astutely designed free practice activities at the end of each section. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars good buy but you need the tape 22 July 2011

The book is good for upper-intermediate and advanced students. Some of it is rather old fashionbed and middle class English. But it explains well when to use intonation at examples. However, you need the tape to hear the dialoques which has to be ordered extra (ISBN 0 521 264901 1). There is no CD available (July, 2011).

This book can not be used for academical research as it does not use in-depth jargon and studies results.
