Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In case you're wondering, the title refers to the abstract "noise machines" built and orchestrated by the Italian Futurists. On Intonarumori, producer Bill Laswell sets his "noise machine" to destination unknown, way beyond the hip-hop universe from which he draws his impressive array of collaborators. Schizophrenic lyrical futurist Kool Keith muses on matters unseen on "Conspiracies", while Flavor Flav lets rip in ways that Chuck D would never condone on "Burnin", a distinctly non-PC tale concerning the perils of unrepentant pussy-pounding. Elsewhere, sorely underrated Wu Tang prophet Killah Priest unleashes a compelling stream of consciousness path through his "Temple Of The Mental" and former Wu vocalist Alicia Blue (aka Blue Raspberry) shines bright on the unsettling ghetto soul of "Flow". But it's left to almost-forgotten hip-hop legend Rammellzee (you know him from the Wild Style film), who spins a vertiginous lyrical vortex on "No Guts No Galaxy", to provide the rhyme and reason why this record is a must-have for all forward-thinking hip-hop aficionados.--Chris Campion

The Material crew's previous outing, Seven Souls, matched Wm. Burroughs with Rammellzee, Rakim samples and other such bricolage--sampling that's revolutionary and more interesting than that last second of Scarface not yet used by some other rapper. Intonarumori is, basically, Prelude to Def Jux Presents, with a scratchy, wonky yet melodic sound throughout. Rammellzee rocks, the K. Priest track is a must, Kool Keith and Flavor put up their best...and the rest is terrific, though you wonder what happened to 'em afterwards. If you like offbeat, intelligent and underground hip-hop, you'll like this--you just never heard of it because it's not from a military-industrial complex label.

Laswell takes on rap . . . 23 Oct 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Material's stuff is always interesting. And, like other albums Bill Laswell has worked on that I've heard, this album has its moments of stunning perfection and a couple of tracks that either don't seem to belong or are just plain bad. This album is 90% excellent, with deeply satisfying beats and top notch rapping. Track 9 is the "out of place" track. Coming off an essentially acapella Killah Priest track talking about the street life, we have a sweet female voice singing about summer days and sleeping in the grass. Hey Bill! She ain't rappin. The bad track comes right after this, with Nature Boy just making a lot of noise. All in all, this album is great because it's Bill Laswell, a great experimenter, working with some really fantastic artists. Five stars with those two tracks removed. Definitely worth getting, for hip hop and Material fans alike.

fans of intelligent hip-hop need to take a look into this supremely avante-garde album.laswell takes the genre into the future with this cd by placing steady beats to rap over in the most unusual of forms.the killah priest track with the tablas is revolutionary and amazing!!! the flavor flav track is at once funny, intelligent and aware.get it if you like rap with a working cerebrum.

Snow Lori and the seven (or so) rapmen 3 Mar 2003
By Rahsaka - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I am writing this just to antagonize the precedent reviewer's point of wiew on one point. The track from Lori Carson may be out of this mood, but it is a cool track, ant it may help some reluctant listeners to appreciate the remaining tracks.

And the track "No guts no galaxy" is soooo reminiscent of "Men in black" that it is hilarious.

Overall, I expected something like "The third power" but was not disappointed that this release went more into rap than the previous effort from Bill Laswell.

It is always a challenge to like what you would, by prejudice (consciously or not), reject;)
