5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of musical theatre 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Bernadette Peters shines in the role of the witch in this (accessible) Sondheim tour de force of fairytale meets human foibles action. Have you ever thought what would happen if a dizzy blonde Red Riding Hood met up with Jack (from the beanstalk) and the Baker's Wife had an affair with Prince Charming? Or how about Rapunzel's problems relating to her mother? A typically complex Sondheim storyline which still manages to appeal on many different levels. Some of his most beautiful music (Children Will Listen, Giants in the Sky), ingenious lyrics ("the end justifies the beans") and very funny dialogue, this is a must for lovers of musicals if only to see Bernadette Peters playing the role she was born for. Suberb musical theatre ( and is a member of the cast of Frasier involved? Answers on a postcard please, Daphne...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Time. Musically. 18 Feb 2003
By Mark Baker TOP 500 REVIEWER
This musical takes several fairy tales and combines them for a fresh, fun journey. A baker and his wife have learned that they are under a curse and can't have any children. To lift the curse, they must find the cape as red as blood, the cow as white as milk, the hair as yellow as gold, and the slipper as pure as glass. Fortunately for them, they are going into the same woods that Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Rapunzel are entering.
The second act picks up "Later." Things don't quite work out as well as everyone expected them to, and they once again find themselves entering the woods to deal with their new challenges.
The first act is a perfect musical comedy with some wonderful moments, but the second act is much darker in tone. While it still has it's funny moments, it is much more serious. But the dramatic turn works well, and what started out as a fun romp turns into a powerful story. Still, because of this, I have a hard time recommending it for children.
The cast does a wonderful job. It's really hard to pick out a highlight because everyone works well together to make it so good. The format, video recording of a live stage performance by the original Broadway cast, took me a little time to get used to when I first watched it, but soon I forgot all about that. The camera captures everything on stage; can't imagine a better seat in the house.
The DVD is just a bare bones version; there's nothing outside of the musical. But it's still worth getting since you will want to watch it many times.
Teens and adults will love this musical's sense of humor and be moved by its emotion. It provides all the joys of a stage play in the comfort of your own home. Buy it today and get ready to journey "Into the Woods."

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money for a true fan! 30 Dec 2001
Format:VHS Tape
Sondheim's Into the Woods has to be one of his most accesible works and for those of us who own the Broadway CD this video is excellent and well worth the money, It also is a breath of fresh air from the awful London Cast Recording. However the video in my opinion would not be a good introduction if you've never heard the music, if this is the case buy the CD, some of the music may require repeated listening but the songs are pure genius imperticular the quartet "no one is alone" which is the most beautiful song, quite magical and very moving.
The costumes, effects and sets are breathtaking, the acting and singing is all satisfactory with some very funny moments. Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason are a special treat although the entire cast are pleasing. You MUST remember however that this is an american production.
A treat for all the family and musical lovers with a very strong and important message providing that "Children will Listen" Enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning version of Sondheim's classic. 9 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is a wonderful video. So often videos of shows can lose the spark that appears on stage, but thankfully this has kept everything. The singing and acting are outstanding, in particular Bernadette Peters as the witch. It is a bright and showy production, and very very funny. It also retains the elegance that matches Sondheim's complex music, which was lost in the almost 'panto' style British version. All in all, this is a far better recording, and does full justice to Sondheim's show.

I apologise in advance for the persistent use of superlatives in my review but I can't sum up how much I enjoy watching this DVD!!!
This is an excellent recording of an amazing show. The power of Sondheim's music and lyrics blend with the effective use of staging to create a masterpiece of musical theatre. I thoroughly recommend you watch this DVD as it does succeed in bringing the theatre to life. Absolutely great!

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic! 12 May 2004
By Sweeny
This is a large scale production! as with most sondheim, a small cast, but all of them are just so good! Bernadette Peters is great in what ever she does, Little Red Riding Hood is superb, Robert Westernberg (the Prince, and the Wolf) is fantastic ... they all are. It has a host of songs that anyone can sing and is just great. Marvel at the amazing set, and just watch a 5-star performance
