Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
No one could really have been expecting a "Gentle Waves"-style side project from Malcolm Middleton, so despite its Winnie The Pooh-esque cover art, Into The Woods doesn’t disappoint. He may not have fellow Arab Strapper Aiden Moffat’s characteristic monosyllabic storytelling to deliver lyrics of self-hatred, loneliness or incompetence, but in his own inimitable Scottish burr, the songs are almost as effective; not as dark, but certainly possessing a charm and identity of their own.

Kicking off with the amusing "Break My Heart", in which he pleads that he’d "rather have you than sing these shit songs", then listing what’ll happen if his heart does get broken, over a jaunty backing track that sounds like a ramshackle Belle & Sebastian. The piano and acoustic sound is continued through most of the album, but absent on the album highlight of "No Modest Bear" where the sound is all cheap electronica and "Bear With Me", which is industrial enough to be Depeche Mode.

Slightly more accessible and with more of a sing-along factor than your average Arab Strap album, it seems that Middleton has managed to carve out a niche away from his band that proves his all-round talent. --Thom Allott

5.0 out of 5 stars Drown your sorrows with a glassful of CLASS, 1 Sep 2005
I stumbled across Malcolm Middleton's name while looking for something on Amazon (nice plug there guys...cheque's in the post is it?) and I liked the cover. I know one shouldn't judge a book...etc...but where cds are concerned, you nearly always can, trust me. When I was over in Edinburgh last week, "Into the Woods" caught my eye again in the Scottish Music section, so I had a wee listen...what the hell this absolute gem of a record was doing in amongst such travesties as "Tartan Hits" and "The Pipes of Bonny Scotland", I will never know (sort it out Fopp, sort it out!). I fell in love with this album as of the very first song. "You're gonna break my heart"...fantastic stuff!! I just wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry when I listened to the whole thing at home that evening. Both are in order, as Middleton belts out such classic lines as "Woke up again today, realised I hate myself, my face is a disease" in his really rather beautiful Scottish accent. His singing voice might not be the best around, and he has very little range, but the songs he pens require exactly that: a near-monotonous, sometimes droning, yet somehow extremely moving delivery. I had never heard any Arab Strap before, and I still haven't got round to it, so it may be that part of the joy I take in this album is the pure novelty factor, but if you can, get your hands on a copy, and listen to it often. Like it now, love it later.

4.0 out of 5 stars The talented half of Arab Strap?, 30 Jul 2005
By A Customer
the title of this review may not be fair, but Malcolm Middleton is certainly the more musical half of Glasgow mainstays Arab Strap. This is Middleton's second collection of solo songs and it's every bit as good as the first. He knows he can't sing very well, but seems to be able to use that to induce great empathy in the listener - or maybe it's just that his songs are often so beautiful that his slightly shakey vocals don't matter a jot.
This is a wonderful record and you definitely don't have to be a fan of the Strap to enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marrying miserabilism to charm, 27 April 2008
By Mr. M. J. Cole "Coleser" (Gloucester UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Into the Woods by Malcolm Middleton (one of those new-fangled compact discs that Tomorrow's World featured the other day) is dominating the listening schedules at Radio Cole FM at the moment. The former Arab Strap master of murky melancholia has managed to marry the miserabilism of his former combo's lyrics to some uplifting electronic soundscapes and acoustic charm. The songs are witty and intelligent but the themes of isolation and despair that dominated much of Arab Strap's output are still apparent and, again, the listener finds himself or herself as voyeur, glancing nervously into a mind dominated by bleak thoughts and uncertainties. This is a fine and rewarding album. I recommend it.
