I'd read of Celtic Frost being a hugely influential band in magazines before I finally picked up this album but had been put off until then as I was somewhat prejudiced against anything associated with black/death metal. By that time I had pretty much grown out of metal in general and thought there wasn't much else out there that I'd find particularly interesting or different. It's not often that you come across an album as unique and ambitious as Into the Pandemonium, particularly from an 'extreme metal band'. The range of styles and directions explored is a real treat to experience. The classical influence hinted at on To Mega Therion is fully developed on tracks like Tristesses de la Lune and Rex Irae, there's an fun new wave cover in Mexican Radio as well as heavy cuts such as Inner Sanctum. The one track which doesn't work for me is the industrial tinged One in Their Pride but It's easy to forgive such a misfire from a band taking such a bold artistic approach to making music. So if you think you've heard everything heavy music has to offer this is one album that may change your mind.

Look up celtic frost anywhere and it will say that they are extreme metal in style, that term doesnt apply for this 1987 release, avant garde is certainly one i would use for this, unusual and influential for the black metal world that was about to take off by introducing female vocals, orchestral arrangements and some very odd time signature changes, falsetto vocals, poppy vocals and doomy, painful vocal styles as well are all to be found here.
The album opens up with 'mexican radio'.a coer version of a poppy song and the band dont stray too far from that realm themselves here. The album is eccletic to say the least in parts but a dark grumble is always close, never black metal but constantly interesting and unsettling in parts, female vocals add to the charm when they feature and indeed that art was pciked up by many a band that followed to create atmosphere and invoke beauty in an ugly world, good stuff.

Prog Thrash? 15 July 2009
By J. Macy
Format:Audio CD
Called at the time "avant-garde", but which could now be called "prog-thrash", INTO THE PANDEMONIUM is arguably one of the bravest and best thrash/speed albums of the formative 80s.

Following on from TO MEGA THERION (again, a great progressive speed/thrash album), and the earlier and more primitive (yet still creative beyond what many of that period could even dream of!) MORBID TALES/EMPEROR'S RETURN, this was to prove a watershed for CF. Later albums were poor. Follow-up Cold Lake was rightly universally panned and Vanity/Nemesis was OK, but not great.

Standard (for CF, anyway) heavy tracks like INNER SANCTUM and BABYLON FELL, jossle with a proto-thrash rap (ONE IN THEIR PRIDE), mixed with semi-classical (.. LA LUNE) and orchestral doom (REX IRAE). The influence of CF has reached far beyond the usual thrash boundaries, and many modern bands cite the CF touch in their own music.

MONOTHEIST (2007) marked a return to form, but sadly another break up means that it is very unlikely we will ever hear such music again. A sad loss, but at least we have albums like ITP to fall back on. Brilliant!
