Product Description

Product Description

Saxophonist/composer Tommy Smith is a major creative force in contemporary music. He performs in settings ranging from solo saxophone to big bands and symphony orchestras. He joined Gary Burton's Group at the age of 18 in 1985, and has been performing throughout the world ever since. He has recorded for Blue Note, Linn Records and others and now leads his own small groups. He has recorded over 16 albums as a leader, featuring world-renowned musicians such as Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Eddie Gomez, Kenny Wheeler and Jon Christensen. Smith continues his exploration of new ideas with this solo recording made in Scotland's Hamilton Mausoleum, an unusual feature of which is Europe's longest and warmest reverberation. The 25 tracks were chosen from a collection of medieval chants, folk songs, ballads and jazz improvisations that were directly inspired by the sound of the chamber and the constellations that can be seen through the observatory shaped dome. This unusual recording by one of the UK's leading jazz musicians will appeal not only to lovers of jazz but also to listeners who have been experimenting with classical/world/folk crossovers such as 'Officium' by Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble. Personnel: Tommy Smith (soprano and tenor saxophones, bells)

Recorded in Scotland's Hamilton Mausoleum, a space often claimed to feature the longest and warmest reverberation of all Europe's buildings, Into Silence finds Tommy Smith striking a very different note from that which marked the first two releases on his own Spartacus label--one each by Smith and his wife Laura. Whereas those two quartet releases put the accent firmly on contemporary swing, Into Silence finds Smith with only his tenor and soprano saxophone and the odd bell or two for company, exploring a rubato blend of medieval chants, folk songs and melodic improvisations. Coltrane's "Naima" and the standards "My Romance" and "My One and Only Love" also feature in the 71-minute programme, but with no disruption of the overall mood. The result is a hauntingly beautiful album: Smith's now sculpted, now buttered lines conjure music of spacious, deeply poetic appeal, which can be recommended especially to anyone who enjoyed Jan Garbarek's collaborations with the Hilliard Ensemble, or such earlier and comparable solo explorations of extraordinary buildings as Paul Horn's and Tomasz Stanko's recordings in the Taj Mahal. --Michael Tucker

Format: Audio CD
Into silence is a rare type of cd It is full of orginal haunting melodies played in an acoustically perfect location. Put the lights out look at the stars and you can "feel", some of the emotion that Tommy must have put into this creation. Guaranteed to relax if you like smooth sax sounds with only the atmosphere as an accompanyment
