5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked Gem, 15 Dec 2005
I first saw this film after hiring it 'on the off-chance' shortly after it came out on video. I watched it that night, watched it again that morning and re-hired it for the rest of that weekend. 60 to 70 viewings later I remain convinced that this is one of the best films I've ever seen. Apart from Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum at the start of their careers, you have cameos from David Bowie, Don Siegal, Carl Perkins and a host of other famous name directors. There's a chase, there's humour, there's a love story and there's a plot that keeps your interest from start to finish. It's just a shame that no-one else seems to know about this film. It deserves a wider audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good late-night movie, 28 Dec 2005
I first saw this movie in the eighties, after a wild evening with friends. At the time, it was an unexpected stunner and it has since lived long in the memory. Watching it now, it seems somewhat dated, clumsy and painfully slow paced. However, much of its original charm remains intact.
Upon first viewing, I had never seen Michelle Pfeiffer and was absolutely knocked out by, what was to me, her screen debut. Even now, you can see that she had star quality in buckets. Goldblume's performance has dated, but at the time, it was fresh and original.
The plot just keeps taking crazy twists, as more and more terrific characters are introduced. Much has been made about the list of fellow directors that keep popping up, the best being Roger Vadim in a particularly funny episode. I loved the slapstick Iranian hitmen, forever finding themselves with their pants down or thwarted by animals. Their answer to any problem seems to be to shoot their way out.
Looking back 20 years, the pace of the film seems to be a problem and films like Pulp Fiction has developed many of its ideas. However, if its deep into the night, you've over indulged and want to slob out with a few friends, this could be just the movie for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wierd & Wonderful, 24 Mar 2005

This is a cracking adventure romp in the Landis tradition. Goldblum is excellent as the bemused anti-hero who unexpectadly gets hooked up with Michelle Pfieffer and is catapulted through a night of danger as they try to escape from a gang of ruthless crooks. But just let the story flow over you as you follow the excitment, listen to the glorious soundtrack (lots of B B King) and play the game of 'spot the guest celebs' which include David Bowie, Carl Perkins, Landis himself and many more. A joy.
