Truly one of the best collections of poetry out there. If you are tempted to buy it, do: you won't be disappointed.
I have already bought two copies for friends and can't seem to stop giving my copies away. 'Intimates' is almost too good to keep!
There is a 'right'ness to Farish's words, and she really knows, like all great poets, how to end a poem superbly. Her work is truly stunning, an absolute joy to read.
This is my favourite poem from the book:
The Lighthouse of Nauset
was removed to a field.
Visitors wonder
does it miss the tides, living on the edge
of emptiness then fullness?
Here there is only the tickle of a cricket,
an out-of-the-way dusk.
The lighthouse says, Listen.
I thought I had no limits,
could look indefinitely at the longing
light lays on water.
Now I want boundaries;
a hedge, plums, more than enough.
