Taking his young city girlfriend along for the trip, a man visits old musical friends in a country village for a string quartet rehearsal.
This 1965 film has a number of connections with Milos Foreman's early docu-drama Rehearsal/Audition (also just released on DVD), but Intimate Lighting is a much more fully realized film. It's one of those quirky classics of the Czech New Wave: lots of understated humour & pathos & little surrealist touches or observations. It's beautifully conceived and realized; great cinematography & editing, making for a very quick-witted film (as opposed to merely comic) and having the uncontrived bittersweet quality that the best East European film, particularly Czech, had in the 1960s and which you rarely find elsewhere. Excellent DVD edition from Second Run (watch out Masters of Cinema!), including interview with director and an informative booklet. After finding out the background info concerning the main actor I realized the film was even more poignant, almost unbearably so. One other recommendation: this was one of Kieslowski's ten favourite films!

The Czech Film Renaissance of the 1960s

During the sixties, before the Russian brutal invasion, the first "Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia manifested itself, among other areas, in a creative new freedom in filmmaking; the films that emerged from that period stand up to the best of Italian Neo-Realism or the French New Wave.
Ivan Passer was Milos Forman's writing partner and his exquisite humor and story telling savoir made itself felt in Forman's early Czech comedies. Then Mr. Passer made his own masterpeice, Intimate Lighting, about the quixotic dreams of two musician friends, one who left their small hometown to become"successful", the other still a music teacher and part of the hometown's chamber music quartet. Intimate Lighting vibrates with pathos and comedy; with a compassionate and ironic eye Passer shines a poetic light on our illusions and small victories. To highlight: a magnificently humorous scene where the diners covetously gawk at the last piece of chicken left on the table, and a drunken twist at the end on the "off into the sunset" scene. A must see for anyone who appreciates fine filmmaking, a good comedy, or wishes to take a peek in the window of a time tragically lost.

A Complex Look at Culture and History in Socialist Czechoslovakia

A great and brilliantly subtle film. This is a turbulent and complex essay on local vs elite culture, on urban vs rural life styles, on utopian ideals vs difficult realities. It was made in the sixties as the satellite countries began to push for atonomy from a bureaucratic and repressive soviet system.
But it speaks to everyone in its portrayal of the role of art and beauty in the lives of common people.

"Intimate Lighting"--a film for connoiseurs of music and social class

"Intimate Lighting" is a Czech film from the 1950s- 60s that I saw several times and purchased in an old VCR to watch again. I bought this DVD through Amazon so that I can see it once more. Very subtle, funny film--a successful musician (a cellist) returns from the capital to his old home town to play a concert with the local symjphony, and meets old friends who didn't make it and stayed behind. If you can imagine four people playing a string quartet with only one of them really competent, the others of varying ineptitude, and finding it very true-to-life and funny, then you will enjoy this film. The ending, which I won't give away (and it would sound ridiculous if I did) is worth seeing the film for. Especially enjoyable for music lovers and music performers, but with something for everybody--the contrast between his girlfriend/mistress, who comes with him, and the wives of the locals is also very true and funny.
