This was an idle read I picked up while on vacation. "Titillating", I thought. A woman's discovery of her (dead) husband's very moving letters to a hitherto unknown and unsuspected lover excites the voyeur in all of us. I read quickly, growing more and more absorbed by the writing style and the theme of throwing off the shackles of a conservative view of life. The ideas that we can smother a loved one by our blind, but well-intentioned doting, that love is an ego trip because we love ourselves in the first instance, and that happiness is ephemeral and unpredictable, are well argued - subtly, but convincingly. The spare, at times poetic prose suits a subject that requires a sort of detached, impressionist treatment. A book that leaves one lost in thought (for any length of time, in this day and age) is one to be recommended.

I spotted this book in a charity shop, and picked it out as I loved Bel Mooney's 'Kitty' stories when I was a child. I didn't realise she had written 'adult books', and although this book looks like something you'd get free with 'Woman and Home' or 'Good Housekeeping', I was curious to read Mooney's 'adult' fiction, and like a previous reviewer said, the blurb definitely bought out the voyeur in me. I started it - and I could not put it down. It made me cry, but not in a way by which I felt embarrassed by myself - because her writing is not over the top, it is not cliche ridden, it does not pretend to be 'serious' and 'deep' and fail. I was completely involved in the feelings depicted, of loss and anger and betrayal and love. My life stopped for a couple of days. I couldn't think about anything except this book. The last book that did this to me was 'The Outsider' by Camus. Very different! But it did affect my head in the same way.

I had never read any Bel Mooney before I read this book, so did not really know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.
This is an extremely well written book that takes you through all the anger, bitterness and sadness of bereavement. It is so totally absorbing that one wonders whether the author has experienced something similar in her own life.
I would recommend this book to anyone wholeheartedly.

Whilst I am a massive fan of Bel Mooney this is not Bel at her best but still very interesting.

Disappointed as book received was not hard-cover as ordered.

It was also only a proof reader's copy and so contained lots of typing mistakes.

Needed to read it for a book club in short time, so could not send it back, unfortunately.
