Great debut B3 album 7 Feb 2006
By Terje Biringvad - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
With the emergence of Joey DeFrancesco in the beginning of the '90's revitalizing the Hammond B3 organ, more great B3 youngsters came to the surface. One of them was Larry Goldings, originally a pianist working with Jon Hendricks and JIm Hall among others, this great CD is his debut album on the organ and his debt to the Jimmy Smith tradition is obvious at the recording time. Pairing with Peter Bernstein on gitar and the "wonderboy" Bill Stewart on drums, this a tight quality trio plays standards like "Skylark" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" with demand and control. Veteran tenor saxofonist David "Fathead" Newman add punch and colour to some of the tunes but not at a level expected from that man. For B3 afficiados - notice a unfamiliar jazz organ sound on Goldings B3 since he's using a vibrato registration that is more convenient to the theatre organ tradition...shaky but doesn't diminish the overall quality of the album.

May , 10 2011 release NOT like the one with Larry (arms folded) on the cover 6 Jun 2011
By Hammer + Jazz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Be careful . I bought this version of the deeply soulful and much beloved THE INTIMACY OF THE BLUES disc here , as i'd sold my 1991 Polygram records copy . I got an MP3 player some years ago and put the original recording on it . Then i sold it . Here's how the two versions differ as i still own a cassette of the 91 date . These are it's songs and proper sequence ; AIN'T NECESSARILY SO , PEGASUS , JIVE COFFEE , SKYLARK , WOULDN'T IT BE LOVERLY , THE INTIMACY OF THE BLUES , THE ACROBAT , EVERY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE , WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME . The version pictured above (without Larry with his arms crossed) are ; BOOKER'S LITTLE BLUES , WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME , INTIMACY OF THE BLUES , AIN'T NECESSARILY SO , SKYLARK , THE ACROBAT , PEGASUS , JIVE COFFEE . As you can see , the sequencing is changed and WOULDN'T IT BE LOVERLY and EVERY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE are removed . Yes , you do get BOOKER'S LITTLE BLUES . It's not the same recording at all . The flow is gone . Someone please tell me how and why this can be done to a BRILLIANT jazz recording ? What a shame . And not a whisper of the changes to you the buying public . Lookout . I wished i'd have known . I would not have bought this version . Period . This German import (with the lover's faces) is not even called "THE" INTIMACY OF THE BLUES , like it's TRUE original . Nor is the title song on the disc . Perhaps that's how this troubling trend ? will start . Lets hope not .
