Review

"This excellent text offers logical, precise technical support for diagnosing mental health problems in children and adolescents, while at the same time capturing the spontaneity and freshness of real-life young people. Each chapter is anchored by a vivid portrait of a troubled child or teenager struggling with the problems characteristic of the DSM-IV diagnosis being discussed. The reader is provided with a concise yet thorough account of diagnostic criteria, exclusion criteria, and differential diagnosis considerations. Well-organized tables facilitate the task of differential diagnosis by summarizing complex information at a glance." --Carl Feinstein, MD, Director of Clinical Studies, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine
"This volume bridges here-and-now clinical observation and current theoretical models. Specific questions are offered to help students and clinicians know what to

Product Description

This highly practical volume provides a complete guide to conducting an age-appropriate child or adolescent interview and formulating a clinically useful DSM-IV diagnosis. Illuminating both the art and the science of child diagnosis, the book blends astute advice on the interview process with crucial information on a wide range of mental and behavioral disorders. Readers learn effective approaches to communicating with children and adolescents on a level they can understand; eliciting information from patients whose verbal and cognitive abilities may be limited; and recognizing how disorders may present in children of different ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Material, 30 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I have just recently bought this book in the US and after reviewing it have shared it with a number of colleagues. As each one has taken an opportunity to look at it, they have each decided that this is a necessary addition to their reference library. I would highly recommend this to anyone that will be working with children as it provides some great insights and suggestions for getting the best out of any interview situation.

This text is clear and easy to read. The information is pratical and useful. I like this book so much that I won't sell it back when I'm done with my class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interviewing children and adolescents, 26 Oct 2010
By Vickie - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Interviewing Children and Adolescents: Skills and Strategies for Effective DSM-IV Diagnosis (Paperback)
This book is awesome for the student who is new to DSM-IV (revised). It is detailed and easier to read than the DSM. It's detail includes everything outlined in the DSM concerning child and adolescent mental issues. The title is deceiving though. It insinuates (IMO) that there are interviewing techniques. Interviewing techniques for kids is very scarce. But aside from this, this book is the easiest and most convenient text book I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, 30 Jan 2009
By Jennifer Kathryn Tibbs "J Tibbs" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Interviewing Children and Adolescents: Skills and Strategies for Effective DSM-IV Diagnosis (Paperback)
This book was very helpful. I work in a human services profession and working with children is very different from working with adults. This book clarifies the differences and uses examples to clarify its message.
