Comprehensive introduction to a rarely discussed subject.,

This review is from: Intersex (Paperback)
This book provides an interesting introduction to the understanding of those with a biologically mixed gender. Some of the interviews, particularly about the effects of 'normalising' surgery on young children, are terribly sad, and cast light on an area of gender studies that is lagging behind psychological self-identification. The book is about those who, due to a variety of genetic factors such as unresponsiveness to hormones in and later outside the womb are born with ambiguous/ androgenous/ hermaphrodite physical features; and who do not develop in the usual physically male/ female pattern governed by hormones. It will raise awareness of prejudices that are so innate in human make-up, that almost everyone is guilty of them; that human beings, whatever their sexual orientation, should be, at least physically, categorisable as definitively male or female... this simply is not so.
