Product Description

Product Description

Aerial photography can give the archaeologist unique information about the development of a particular landscape over the centuries. Since the inception of Channel 4's Time Team, Mick Aston has been taking thousands of aerial photographs and a selection of these form the basis of the present book. After a brief introduction to the history of aerial photography and to its main features (cropmarks, parchmarks, earthworks, soil marks, patterns), he uses 25 case studies both to cover the full chronological span, from prehistory and Roman times to the Middle Ages and on to Industrial Britain, and to illustrate the central themes of settlement, land use, communications, ritual and religious sites, military and defense sites, and industrial landscapes.

Not what I expected. 22 May 2008
Format:Paperback
I'm an archaeology student and I bought this book as Mick was cited in one a Landscape lecture as being something of an authority on the subject. He comes from a geological academic background and his first book on the subject was supposed to be the defining text on archaeology and landscape. I bought this book hoping to get an insight into the archaeological view of lndscape and how it relates to the bigger issues of the discipline, however the book did not deliver. It's essentially a picture book with very brief discussions on what is being covered. I'd disagree with the first reviewer in as much that the pictures tend to be of a consistently high quality, it bears keeping in mind that these are aerial photographs, but if you're looking for an academic text on the subject, this is not the one for you.

If you're coming at it from a more casual viewpoint however, then this might suit you better. Lots of good quality pictures of interesting sites accompanied by relatively jargon-free discussion.

One of a series of books that complement the Time Team series which is still enjoyed. Great team of people bringing history into our homes.
